Big Sky, Mont. - The University of New Mexico womens Alpine team began the 2003 season where they left off in 2002 by winning the womens Slalom event in the opening Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association meet in Big Sky, Montana this weekend. The Lobos are the defending national champions in the womens Slalom event and showed that the loss of individual national champ Marte Dolva has not weakened their chances of repeating.
The Lobos took home five of the eleven top spots in the womens Slalom event, with junior Caroline Schicht finishing second. 2002 All American junior Jennifer Delich placed fourth in the race, while freshmen Gladys Weidt,, Kathrin Spendier, and Jennifer Shively began their Lobo careers in excellent fashion with 9th, 10th, and 11th place finishes, respectively. Sophomore Helena Woodrow placed 19th while freshman Monica Bruggeman finished 27th to round out the Lobo competitors. Delichs fourth place finish in the Slalom tied her career best set at last years NCAA West Regionals, while her finish in the Giant Slalom set a new career mark by eight places. On the mens side, freshmen Alexander Freberg and Christian Jensen placed 8th and 9th in the Slalom to lead the Lobos to a 4th place finish in the event.
