Rumford, Maine - The University of New Mexico women’s Nordic team won its second straight race at the U.S. Nationals on Monday in the 5K Freestyle race. Sophomore Martina Stursova placed second in the event, just 1.2 seconds behind Northern Michigan’s Melissa Oram. Junior Jenny Wissting followed in third while senior Kristina Strandberg placed 14th.

The Lobos took the win because Northern Michigan’s top-2 finishers are not eligible for NCAA Competition this season. Second place went to Alaska-Fairbanks, with NMU taking third. Other Lobo finishers included sophomore Andrea Roberts (17th), junior Brooke Gosling (21st), and freshman Janelle Kinner (56th).

On the men’s side, Johan Rydquist placed third in the 10K freestyle race. Rydquist joined the Lobos during the semester break and will be available for the 2003 collegiate season. New Mexico will compete in one more race today before heading to Heber City, Utah for the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate meet hosted by Alaska-Anchorage on January 12-13.
