Skiers End Montana State Meet in Fourth Place
Bozeman, Mont. After winning their first overall meet since 1992 last weekend, the UNM Ski Team had some unfinished business to take care of with the conclusion of the Montana State meet this weekend. The Alpine team raced on January 3-4, while most of the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Associations Nordic teams were in Rumford, Maine competing in the U.S. Nationals. As a result, the Nordic leg of the MSU meet was postponed until this weekend. The Lobo Alpine squad finished in fourth place and the Nordic team was unable to help UNM gain any ground after a fifth place finish. The Lobos (481) finished the MSU meet in fourth place overall behind Denver (518), Colorado (538) and first place Utah (575.5).
On Friday, the Lobos got a fourth place finish from the men while the women placed third in the Freestyle races. Johan Rydquist added a second place finish to his two earlier wins while Lars Krogsveen placed 16th and Jacob Zehnder finished 22nd for the mens squad. The women skied without sophomore Martina Stursova and Brooke Gosling which hurt the Lobo squad that won both races at the Alaska/Utah meet. Senior Kristina Strandberg stepped up with a third place finish while junior Jenny Wissting placed fourth. Freshman Janelle Kinner scored her first points as a Lobo with a 31st place finish. On Saturday it was the mens squad who skied without their best athlete when Rydquist, who won both Nordic races at the Alaska/Utah meet last week, did not compete. Sophomore Lars Krogsveen led UNM with a 15th place finish while junior Jacob Zehnder placed 24th. Sophomore Graham Bremner rounded out UNM scoring with a 29th place finish. The women were still without Gosling and Stursova and struggled to another third place finish. Wissting placed second with Strandberg coming in 6th and Kinner 33rd. The Lobos (1303) fell to third place in the overall RMISA standings and are just four points ahead of fourth place Denver (1299). Utah still leads the RMISA standings with 1401 total points while Colorado (1321) holds on to second place. UNM next travels to Boulder and Lake Eldora, Colorado for the Colorado-RMISA Meet on January 31 February 1.
