Boulder, Colo. - The University of New Mexico Ski Team sits in third place overall after the first day of competition at the Colorado-Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association meet in Boulder and Lake Eldora, Colo. The Lobos got a first place performance from the mens Nordic team in the Freestyle race and earned a total of 248 points, trailing only Colorado (308) and Utah (286).

Competition got off to a great start for the Lobos as the mens Nordic squad took its first race of the year. Freshman Jimmy Vika was his first race as a Lobo with a time of 23:08.9, just 0.1 of a second faster than second place Henrik Hoye of Colorado. Junior Johan Rydquist, the conference leader in the Freestyle, placed 8th in the race. Sophomore Lars Krogsveen completes the Lobo scoring with a 10th place finish.

The womens Nordic team, ranked second in the RMISA in the Freestyle, did not have its best performance but still managed a third place finish. The Lobos were led by sophomore Martina Stursovas seventh place finish. Junior Jenny Wissting placed 10th in the race while senior Kristina Strandberg came in 12th.

The Lobos sat in third place following the Nordic events and still had the Alpine women left to race. The Lobo women came into the race ranked second in the conference, only trailing Utah, and junior Caroline Schicht was the No. 1 Giant Slalom racer in the RMISA. Despite this, it was host Colorado that took the womens Giant Slalom race. Schicht suffered her first fall of the season while 2002 All-American junior Jennifer Delich also fell. Things could have been much worse for the Lobos, but freshman Kathrin Spendier stepped up with a career-high fourth place finish. Sophomore Helena Woodrow and freshman Gladys Weidt both recorded season-highs with an 8th place and 11th place finish respectively.

The mens Alpine team a tough afternoon, placing 7th in the Giant Slalom. Only two of the five Lobos finished both runs. Freshman Christian Jensen earned a season-high 6th place finish. Sophomore Gottfried Schwarzmueller was the only other Lobo to score points with a season-high 19th place finish.

New Mexico is still in the hunt for its second win of the season. The Lobos race in the Classic and Slalom races tomorrow in Boulder and Lake Eldora, Colo.
