Skiing: Wissting, Vika Earn RMISA Skier of the Week Awards
Albuquerque, N.M. - Two of the Lobos Nordic Ski Team members took home Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Skier of the Week awards for their performances at the Western State - RMISA meet last weekend. Junior Jenny Wissting earned the womens award while freshman Jimmy Vika won the mens honor.
Wissting, a 2000 All-American from Vikbolandet, Sweden, has returned to the Lobo squad after a two year absence and is keeping up with the best skiers in the nation. She placed fourth in the womens 5K Classic race on Friday, and she held on to her fourth place ranking in the RMISA womens Classic event. On Saturday, Wissting led the womens team to an overall win in the 10K Freestyle race with a second place finish. She currently is ranked second in the RMISA womens Freestyle event. Vika is a mid-season transfer from Ingeberg, Norway who has made a huge impact on the Lobo ski team, despite only competing in two collegiate events so far this season. He has three wins in four races, including two wins at Western State. On Friday, Vika led the mens Nordic team with a win in the 10K Classic race. He is currently in fourth place in the RMISA mens Classic standings. On Saturday, he helped the men win their second straight Freestyle race by placing first in the 15K event. With the win, Vika moved into the top spot in the RMISA Freestyle standings. Other skiers of the week honors awarded today went to Denver mens Alpine skier Christopher Berg and Utah womens Alpine skier Liina Johansson. The Lobos are until February 23 when they travel to Winter Park, Colo to take part in the 2003 NCAA West Regionals hosted by the University of Denver. ###
