West Yellowstone, Mont. - The University of New Mexico Nordic Ski Team opened their 2002-03 season with a strong performance from the womens squad in the NorAM 5K Classic Race on Friday. Junior Jenny Wissting finished third in the race that included the Top U.S. Ski Team members, the Canadian Ski Team, and the top collegiate skiers in the country. She finished first among all of the collegiate skiers. Also earning a Top-10 finish was senior Kristina Strandberg who finish eighth overall and fourth among collegiate skiers.

Rounding out the Lobo women were sophomore Martina Stursova (16th), sophomore Andrea Roberts (21st), Brooke Gosling (29th), and Janelle Kinner (40th) who all skied well in the field of 52 competitors.

On the mens side, junior Jacob Zehnder placed 48th while Graham Bremner finished 71st in the mens field of 86 skiers.

On Saturday, both the men and women skied in sprint races and competed against the same talented field. Wissting had the 5th fastest qualifying time while Stursova was close behind in sixth place. Both Lobos qualified in the top-16 and moved on to the next round. Wissting placed ninth overall by advancing to the quarterfinals, while Stursova finished seventh by advancing to the final round.
