Devils Thumb, Colo. - The University of New Mexico women's Nordic ski team is currently in training in the Colorado and New Mexico mountains, preparing for the 2003 NCAA collegiate ski season. Yesterday, the Lobos competed in their secod event of the season and had an impressive showing, taking two of the top-3 spots in the race.
Sophomore Martina Stursova and senior All-American Kristina Strandberg sprinted to the finish line of their 10K Classic race with Niina Karvonen of the University of Denver. Karvonen edged out the two Lobos, but New Mexico still managed to grab the next two spots. Finishing in a distant fourth was the 2002 NCAA runner-up from the University of Denver, Tara Hamilton. The Lobos could have had another top-5 finisher but junior Jenny Wissting was ill and unable to race. Wissting rejoins the Lobos after a two-year absence. She was a 2000 All-American and a member of the Lobo Nordic Women's national championship team in 2000. The Lobos will race again in Durango, Colo. on December 28, before heading off to the U.S. Nationals in Rumford, Me. in early January.)*+,.$/D0d123457$8D9t:;;$<
