All University of New Mexico Spirit Program Applicants will be judged and selected based on the execution of skills listed below, an interview and a Coach's score and recommendation.

$20.00 cash to be paid on the day of clinic per participant/per clinic
If you attend all three clinics, the final clinic will be $10.00 for a total of $50.00 for all three.

These clinics are not required in order to tryout, but are STRONGLY recommended. By attending, you will get a head start on stunting and tryout information. The fee is $20.00 per participant/per clinic and each participant will be required to bring a completed Release Form in order to participate.

Preferred Skills

APPEARANCE

Please be aware that this is an important part of your tryout process. You should appear "game ready" throughout the entire weekend.

Cheer What to wear: Cotton shorts (female), gym shorts (male), athletic t-shirt or tank, sport bras, white socks and cheer shoes. Please make sure your selections are appropriate and we suggest that you wear red, grey, black or white. Wearing other University apparel is not recommended.

Shirts need to be tucked in and no hats or jewelry of any kind will be permitted. Female applicants must have hair pulled up and away from the face and wear cheer bloomers under cotton shorts. Male applicants should be clean shaven during the tryout weekend.

Dance What to wear: Black dance pants and black tank style top with hair pulled up and away from the face. All applicants must bring jazz shoes and tennis shoes and no jewelry of any kind will be permitted.

CHEER TUMBLING

All tumbling must be performed safely without a spotter. In addition to the preferred skills, we will ask you to perform any additional tumbling you may have up to two passes.

Female Preferred Skills: Standing Back Handspring, Standing Back Handspring Back Tuck, Standing Back Tuck and Running Round-off Back Tuck

Male Preferred Skills: Standing Back Tuck and Running Round-off Back Tuck

CHEER PARTNER STUNTS

All Stunting must be performed with a potential member of the 2010-2011 University of New Mexico Cheerleaders attending the tryouts. For the All-Girl team, applicants can tryout for one stunting position of your choice (base, back or flyer). We are looking for strength, technique and body awareness in stunting technique and additions to the skills in the loads and dismounts of the skills. If a female applicant is trying out for All-Girl and Co-ed, she must tryout with both sets of preferred skills.

Female Co-ed Stunts: Liberty, Stretch and Optional

Male Co-ed Stunts: Liberty, Stretch and Optional

CHEER SIDELINE & FIGHT SONG

Both the sideline and fight song will be taught at the clinic on Friday, April 30th. We will be looking for proper motion technique, rhythm, memorization, natural enthusiasm and crowd leading ability.

CHAPARRAL DANCE TEAM SKILLS

All applicants will be judged on a 2-minute jazz routine, 1-minute hip-hop routine, a 2-hour technique class and a sideline which incorporate the skills listed below.

Turns:Double turns in parallel right/left
Triple turns in parallel right/left
Coupe turns (turns at the ankle) turned out double/triple, right/left
Double turn to side tilt kick right/left
Releve turns (turns in second) right/left
Catch turns right/left

Leaps:Front leaps right/left
Inverted leaps right/left
Side leaps right/left
Leap turns (calypsos) right/left
Switch leaps right/left
Toe touch

Splits: Right/Center/Left

LOBO LOUIE & LUCY MASCOTS

Each applicant will be asked to perform a 2 minute skit with music and props incorporated. Remember to develop the personality of the mascot and. Please bring your own music and props and each applicant will have time to work on the skit on Friday, April 30th. Mascots may only use other potential UNM Spirit Members for assistance in their performance.

Eligibility & University Acceptance

All UNM Spirit Program Applicants must bring a copy of UNM Spring Enrollment for current UNM students, a UNM Letter of Acceptance for incoming freshmen or a copy of High School transcripts if you have not yet received your letter from UNM. All applicants must have a 2.0 minimum cumulative GPA in order to tryout for a position on the UNM Spirit Program. If selected for any of the teams or mascot, UNM Spirit Program Members must enroll and earn 12 hours and maintain a 2.5 or better semester GPA.

Medical information requirements

All UNM Spirit Program Applicants must bring a copy of health insurance information/card and complete the Pre-Participation Physical Exam Form on the Tryout Application. Student insurance is not accepted. Returning 2010-2011 UNM Spirit Members will not need to complete this form, but will need to have a copy of their insurance card.

Commitment

All newly selected UNM Spirit Program Members must attend the MANDATORY meeting on Sunday, April 17, 2011 at 6:30pm in The Pit.

2011 SUMMER COMMITMENT
UCA/UDA College Summer Camp and Camp Practices are Mandatory for all Cheerleaders, Dancers & Mascots - Approximately July 11-19, 2011

Video Tryout Information

It is STRONGLY encouraged for every applicant to attend the tryout, but video tryouts will be accepted for out-of-state applicants only. All preferred skills must be shown on the video and all required information must be included in the packet and received by Monday, April 11, 2011. DVD and VHS format will be accepted.
