18 New Mexico track & field athletes looks to advance to the NCAA Championships this weekend
Joe Franklin's Lobos are sending their best athletes to fight for a chance to compete at the NCAA Outdoor Championships
The Lobo women racked up 145.5 team points over the four-day meet, while the men combined for 149
The Lobo women are in second place while the men sit in third after the third day of action at the MW Track Championships.
The Lobos are heading to the MW Championships with high expectations as the men aim to back up their indoor title.
The UNM track and field team takes on the MW at the conference championships in Colorado Springs, Colo., May 9-12.
2012 Indoor: Competed at two meets versus some of the preeminent competition in the NCAA...Opened at the nationally competitive Don Kirby Elite Invitational, placing 17th in the long jump with a 20-1 leap...Claimed seventh in the long jump and sixth in the triple jump at the Mountain West Championships, leaping 23 1/2 and 48-4 1/2, respectively.
2012 Outdoor: Participated at five meets, primarily at the triple jump...Started the season with a fourth-place jump at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational, leaping 47-7 1/4...Claimed a pair of top-three marks at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational (49-2 1/4, second) and Texas Tech Red Raider Open (50-9 1/2)...At the MW Outdoor Championships, leapt an eighth-place long jump (23-2) and fourth-place triple jump (49-9)...Qualified to the First Round of the NCAA Outdoor Championships, placing 14th with a 50-11 mark.
2011 Indoor: Participated in four competitions...Recorded a 7.35 60m dash at the New Mexico Invitational, good for sixth...Placed tenth in the long jump at the Don Kirby Invitational with a mark of 20'-11.25" (6.38m)...Registered a 10th-place finish in the long jump at the MWC Indoor Championships, reaching 21'-7.25" (6.58m).
2010 Indoor: Competed at eight meets in the triple jump, long jump, 60m and 200m...Opened the season with a win in the triple jump at the Lobo Open, reaching 48' (14.63m)...Fifth-place finish in the long jump at the Lobo Challenge, 21'11" (6.68m)...Finished sixth in the triple jump at the New Mexico Invitational with a mark of 48'10" (14.88m)...Placed seventh in the long jump at the New Mexico Classic & Multis, leaping 23' (7.01m)...Runner-up in the triple jump at the Air Force Invitational with a mark of 50'2" (15.29m)...Posted a tenth-place finish at the MWC Indoor Championships in the long jump, reaching 22'-5.75" (6.85m).
2010 Outdoor: 2010 best jump of 50'-00.5" in the triple jump at the MWC Championships for a 2nd place finish earning 8pts for the Lobos and All-MWC honors...Made it to Austin, Texas to compete at the NCAA Regionals...Finished 4th at the MWC Championships in the long jump with a wind-aided mark of 23'-7.25".
2009 Outdoor: Made an immediate impact upon joining the team, flying a lifetime best 50'-11.00" (15.52m) on his second attempt in the triple jump at New Mexico's Don Kirby Invitational...Jump led the Mountain West Conference (40th nationally), was the best by a Lobo since 1984, and made him the first UNM triple jumper to qualify for the NCAA regional meet...Earned all-MWC honors with a third place finish in the event (48-08.75) at the MWC Championships...Also added a seventh place MWC finish in his lone long jump competition of the year (21-09.00)...27th at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships (47-03.75).
2009 Indoor: Did not compete.
A 2008 graduate of Rolling Meadows High School in Arlington Heights, Ill...All-state receiver who had 37 catches for 552 yards and 5 TDs as a senior for this Chicago-area school...Kirk scored 7 TDs on the season, including one rushing and one on a punt return...Had 241 yards in kickoff and punt returns as a senior...The Mustangs went 9-2 last fall...A three-year starter for head coach Doug Millsaps...Also played cornerback...A four-year letterman for the basketball team and an accomplished performer in track...All-state in the triple jump, and he finished 7th nationally at a Junior Olympics meet in 2007 with a leap of 48-06.75.
Born in Hoffman Estates, Ill...Full name is Tynell Limuel Kirk...Son of Cheri Kirk...Would like to be a chef after playing days are over...Interest in cooking originates from a 7th-grade Home Economics class, and he took cooking classes in high school.
