Lobos Post Solid Performance at UTEP Invitational
April 14, 2012
EL PASO, Texas - Hot off its best weekend of the outdoor season, the University of New Mexico track and field team posted 22 top-fifteen finishes in windy conditions at the UTEP Invitational in El Paso, Texas.
With only a handful competing in El Paso after a busy three days last week, the Lobos managed ten top-10 finishes, with Kendall Spencer's second-place mark in the long jump pacing the team.
Spencer, the NCAA leader in the long jump, tallied a strong 25-foot, 4.5-inch leap to lead New Mexico. While not at the same astronomical level as last week's 26-8.25 jump registered at the Don Kirby Invitational, Spencer's mark would rank as one of the nation's best in 2012 and is just inches from breaking into the top-ten performance list at UNM.
Also competing in the field events for the Lobos was the multi-event duo of Richard York and Sam Potter. York placed sixth in the shot put with a mark of 39-0.25 and 11th in the discus with a personal best of 129-7. Potter placed 14th in the discus with personal best of 121-11 and 14th in the javelin with a mark of 139-5.
Zach Smith, competing alongside Spencer in the long jump, leapt 22-8 for 14th place.
Markus Miller rounded out the men's field events as he went 6-0.75 in the high jump for 15th.
On the track for the men, De'Vron Walker's fifth-place mark in the 110-meter hurdles led the Lobos. His 14.70-second time was followed by Potter's ninth-place effort of 15.25 and Chad Clark's 15th-place time of 15.73. In the 400m, Gizeh Ibañez clocked a 51.32 mark in the 400m for his own 15th-place finish.
For the women, Shirley Pitts highlighted the New Mexico performance. She crossed the finish line of the 400m in 57.69 to earn fourth, and Tawsha Brazley (58.43) and Rachel Kelchner (61.60) went seventh and 15th, respectively.
Out in the field events, Marin Schweigert recorded a 5-4.5 mark in the high jump to snag sixth, while Kimberly Vandergeest went 5-0.5 for 15th. Nathalie Busk flew 11-4.5 in the pole vault to capture tenth.
The Lobos are back at it next week at the 54th Annual Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., April 19-21, 2012.
