York Named MW Athlete of the Week after Record Performance
Feb. 5, 2013
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- University of New Mexico senior Richard York has been named Mountain West Men's Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week for meets contested from Feb. 1-3. This is the second such recognition of his career.
York, competing for New Mexico for the first time this year, placed third overall in the men's heptathlon at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational in Lincoln, Neb., on Feb. 1-2. He scored a personal-record 5,538 points in the seven-event heptathlon, including two new career marks.
In the long jump, York leaped 23 feet, 5 ¼ inches, while in the shot put he threw 42-8. His old personal bests were 23-4 ¾ and 40-7 ½, respectively. York's long jump distance ranks third in the MW this season.
The St. Louis, Mo., product finished top-four in every event, and scored more than 750 points in six of the seven events.
His point total also ranks first in the Mountain West in 2013 and 13th in the NCAA this season.
Additionally, York set a new school record, breaking his own mark of 5,537 points set two years.
With the one-point improvement, York tightens his hold on the school mark in the heptathlon. He now holds the five best heptathlon performances in New Mexico history (5538 points, 5537, 5533, 5408 and 5294).
This is the first indoor athlete of the week recognition for York this season, and the second in his career. He was selected for the honor on Feb. 8, 2011, when he set his previous record of 5,537 points in the heptathlon at the New Mexico Classic Heptathlon on Feb. 4-5, 2011.
This is just the second time in program history that New Mexico has received three conference selections in a single indoor season, and the first time three different athletes have been recognized. In 2010, Lee Emanuel was honored twice and Ashley Gibson was selected once.
The highest total number of conference athletes of week ever garnered in any season (indoor and outdoor) is four, accomplished in 2007, 2010 and 2012.
The Lobos also have earned the most conference honors in the MW when the men's and women's selections are combined. Out of the ten plaudits awarded in 2013 by the MW, Air Force, Boise State and San Diego State are the only institutions with multiple selections, each receiving two.
San Diego State junior Shanieka Thomas was selected on the women's side.
