Caldwell Earns Co-Athlete of Week Nod after Record Performance
Feb. 12, 2013
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — University of New Mexico junior Luke Caldwell has been named Mountain West Men's Co-Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week for meets contested from Feb. 7-10. This is the first selection of his career.
Caldwell, from Betchworth, England, finished sixth in the men’s 5,000-meter run at the Husky Classic in Seattle on Feb. 9. His time of 13 minutes, 40.39 seconds is first in the Mountain West and ranks seventh in the NCAA in 2013.
He also broke the New Mexico and MW record in the 5K. The previous UNM record was 13:43.20 set by Chris Barnicle at the 2010 NCAA Indoor Championships, while the former MW record was 13:41.26 set by the Air Force Academy's Justin Tyner at the same meet.
Caldwell is the only male athlete in the Mountain West to have broken a conference record in 2013.
Caldwell, who hadn’t competed in the 5000 in nearly two years, also lowered his previous lifetime best by nearly a minute (14:37.89).
This is the first indoor track and field athlete of the week recognition for Caldwell. He was selected as the conference’s cross-country co-athlete of the week on Oct. 2, 2012.
For New Mexico, this is the fourth time a Lobo has earned at least a share of an indoor athlete of the week selection in 2013. Amber Menke and Josephine Moultrie earned the women's recognition outright on Jan. 15 and Jan. 29, respectively, while Richard York took home the men’s honor last week.
This is also the first time in program history that New Mexico has received four conference athlete of the week selections in a single indoor season. Outdoors, the Lobos have garnered four selections three times (2007, 2010 and 2012).
The Lobos also have earned the most conference honors in the MW when the men's and women's selections are combined. Out of the 13 plaudits awarded in 2013 by the MW, New Mexico has received four, while only Air Force (three selections) and San Diego State (three) have more than two.
Air Force’s Cale Simmons shared the men’s award with Caldwell, while San Diego State junior Shanieka Thomas was selected on the women's side for the second-straight week.
