Indoor Track: Isworth Selected For NCAA Championship Meet

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Track and Field Committee announced today the participants in the 2003 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships. University of New Mexico sophomore transfer Bridgid Isworth was the final competitor selected to compete in the women's pole vault, which gets underway on Saturday, March 15 at 4:30 p.m. (MST).

Isworth surpassed the NCAA provisional qualifying standard four times in five meets this indoor season, including a season-best leap of 13-02.50 to capture the Mountain West Conference pole vault title. The Melbourne, Australia native won three meets and finished second twice, despite competing through a painful case of plantar fasciitis. Isworth, the UNM indoor record holder, has been ranked among Trackwire Online's "Dandy Dozen" national top-12 pole vault rankings throughout the season. Last spring, she captured the bronze medal at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, England and owns a personal-best outdoor mark of 14-01.25 in the event. Isworth is the first New Mexico athlete to compete at the NCAA Indoor Championships in head coach Matt Henry's three-year tenure.

"If you look at the list of qualifiers, Bridgid was the last lady selected, but especially in this event, that doesn't make a bit of difference" said Henry. "I've seen her vault much higher in practice, her foot is feeling much better, so we'll have to see how it all turns out. Bridigd is going to be a great representative of the University of New Mexico though and we're all excited about the great opportunity she's going to have this weekend."

The championships will be held March 14-15, at Randall Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The University of Arkansas serves as the host.

A total of 540 participants will compete in the championships. Student-athletes qualified for the championships by reaching the automatic and provisional standards established for each event.
