ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The University of New Mexico’s Modrall Sperling Don Kirby Invitational got underway this afternoon at Great Friends of UNM Track Stadium with the men’s decathlon and women’s heptathlon competitions. UNM senior Keren Sari-Bentzur has a commanding lead in the heptathlon, while sophomore transfer Ryan Voge is the pacesetter in the decathlon. UNM head coach Matt Henry was forced to cancel the main track and field events on Saturday, March 22, after heavy snows in Colorado forced the majority of the invited teams to cancel their travel plans. The final day of multi-event competition resumes at noon on Friday, March 21 at the UNM Track Stadium.

Sari-Bentzur, who was ninth in the heptathlon at the 2002 NCAA Championships, won every event on the afternoon. She shattered her personal-best in the shot put with a mark of 39-02.25 and also clocked a strong altitude-adjusted time of 14.65 in the 100-meter hurdles. She also had a solid high jump performance with a leap of 5-06.50, which netted 842 points. Genea Long of New Mexico State is second (2,540), 651 points behind Sari-Bentzur, while UNM true freshman Suzanne Nguyen is currently in sixth place with 2,045 points.

On the men’s side, Voge and true freshman Robert Gunn are 1-2 at the midway point. Voge holds a 224-point lead on Gunn, 3,593-3,369, as both men compete in their first collegiate decathlon competition. True freshman Adam Frangos is currently sixth with 3,121 points in his collegiate debut. The trio won three of the five events today with Gunn taking the 100 meters (11.34*), Voge winning the long jump (22-06.25) and Frangos capturing the 400 (51.91*). Unattached athlete Bob Koski is in third with 3,326 points, while Jason Simmons of South Plains College (4th - 3,300) and Western State College’s Brent Kinseth(5th - 3,245) are also in striking distance.
