WALNUT, Calif. -- University of New Mexico sophomore Matt Gonzales recorded a time of 13:48.35 to finish ninth among collegiate competitors (22nd overall) in the invitational section of the mens 5,000 meters on Thursday night at the Mt. SAC Relays. Gonzales NCAA regional qualifying time is the fastest in the Mountain West Conference this year and the second-fastest in league history.

An automatic national championship qualifier in the 10,000 and Midwest regional qualifier in the 1,500, Gonzales has shattered his personal-best in all three distance events this season. The Santa Fe, N.M. native shaved over 20 seconds off his previous best in the 5,000 and finished just 8.81 seconds shy of the 17-year-old UNM record in the event.

In other Thursday action, sophomore Veronica Gonzales (no relation) established another career-best and inched up the Midwest rankings with a throw of 139 feet in the javelin. Gonzales finished seventh in the open university competition, improving upon her previous best by two inches. Fellow sophomore Amber Nolte recorded a season-best of 11-06.00 to finish tied for 10th in the pole vault, while yet another sophomore, Amanda Barnes, was 24th in the discus (121-01).

Elsewhere, sophomores Nick Martinez and Cameron Clarke finished fifth and 11th, respectively, in the open section of the 5,000 meters. Martinez crossed the line in 14:33.86, while Clarke clocked a time of 14:43.82 in his first collegiate 5K race. In the discus, junior Jordan Parker placed 12th with a toss of 143-06.
