NEW MEXICO:One of the nation's top collegiate long distance runners, who will be an All-America candidate in cross country and track in his second year at UNM...NCAA qualifier in the 10,000 last year and made an immediate impact in his U.S. cross country debut, earning 2nd team all-MWC honors as the Lobos' No. 2 runner behind All-American Jeremy Johnson.2007-08: (outdoor) Capped his spring with a 10th place finish in the 10,000m at the NCAA Championships...clocked a time of 29:22.59 to finish 9 spots above his seed...ranked second in the MWC behind All-American teammate Jeremy Johnson with a career-best and NCAA provisional qualifying 10K time of 28:56.39 (May 4 at Stanford)...ran under 29:30 in all 3 10,000 races...ranked 2nd on the team and 5th in the MWC with a top 5,000m time of 14:09.78...competed in the 5K at both the MWC (9th) and NCAA Midwest Region (14th) Championship meets...placed 7th with a time of 3:51.13 (3rd on team) in his lone 1,500 race of the spring at the MWC Championships...(indoor) Raced 3 times in his U.S. track debut, leading the team in the 3,000 and 5,000...recorded an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 14:00.30 (3rd MWC) in his lone 5K at Washington...season-best of 8:13.44 in the 3K at Notre Dame...was 11th in the event at the MWC Championships, but earned all-MWC honors as the anchor of the Lobos' silver medal distance medley relay team...helped UNM edge Air Force at the line and finish just 1.11 seconds behind BYU in the race...(cross country) Was the top newcomer for the men's team, scoring in all 5 races and running 2nd on the team 4 times...3 top-20 finishes, including a season-best 8th at the MWC Championships to earn a spot on the all-MWC second team...28th at the NCAA Mountain Region Championships (31:20), just 3 spots shy of all-region recognition...20th at Oregon with a season-best 8K time of 23:57...time ranked 2nd on the team and 5th in the MWC...Academic All-MWC. PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE:Attended St. Mary's University College in London...British University 10,000m champion in 2006 (30:26.68)...ran a career-best time of 29:44 in the 10K in 2007...helped St. Mary's win its first British University cross country title in 2004 and finish 3rd in `05...has run for the Great Britain national team 3 times.PERSONAL:Born in Oxford, England...full name is Matthew John Ashton...son of John and Jeanette Ashton...working on his master's degree in Physical Education.
