NEW MEXICO: Experienced senior leader who is the lone three-year letterwinner on the women's side...has competed in 18 career cross country races for UNM, nine more than any other runner on the squad, since arriving on campus in Matt Henry's first year in 2000...entered the program as an unheralded walk-on, but has worked to become one of the top runners in the MWC...has continued to drop her times every year...an all-conference candidate who could work her way into the NCAA Championship field...six-time academic all-MWC honoree in track and cross country and a 2002-03 MWC Scholar-Athlete Award winner. 2003: (outdoor) Owned the Lobos' top-three 5,000m times, including a personal-best of 17:51.63 at LSU...recorded three second place finishes before notching her first career victory in a 3K race at UTEP...scored for the first time at the MWC Championships with gutsy eighth place finish in the 5,000...academic all-MWC for the third straight season...(indoor) Competed in a pair of 3,000m races...clocked the team's second-fastest time of the season, a 10:51.81 at the MWC Championships.
2002: (cross country) Paced the women's squad in the final five meets of the season...missed the first two competitions of the year after contracting a serious case of food poisoning, then was hampered by laryngitis in the season-finale...still recorded four of the Lobos' top-10 6K times, including the three fastest...notched top finish (16th) and top 6K time (22:16) of the season at the MWC Championships...academic all-MWC honoree for third straight season...(outdoor) UNM's top-ranked 5,000m runner, clocking a time of 17:53.25 (15th MWC) in a season-best second place finish at the Mesa Classic...recorded three top-three finishes...second team honoree for Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award...academic all-MWC honoree for second-straight season...(indoor) Won a pair of races and owned the team's top 5K time (18:15.48 - 16th MWC)...No. 2 on the team in the 3,000 (10:29.17) and ran the fourth-fastest mile. 2001: (cross country) Improved by leaps and bounds during the cross country season...led UNM in three meets and finished among the team's top-three in every race after running sixth on the team most of 2000...blew away the field at the UNM Lobo Invitational, leading from start to finish to earn her first career victory...owned the Lobos' two fastest 6K times and notched three top-20 finishes after finishing no higher than 21st as a freshman...academic all-MWC for second-straight season...(outdoor) Ran five middle distance races with a top finish of fourth in the 1,500 at the UTEP Springtime Invitational...No. 2 1,500m runner on the team...academic all-MWC honoree...(indoor) Competed in six middle distance races in her debut season...2000: (cross country) Recorded a pair of top-25 finishes for the Lobos...academic all-MWC honoree. HIGH SCHOOL: Letterwinner in cross country and track at Cibola High School in Albuquerque, under coach Tara Warrior...earned all-district honors in `99 and all-academic honors from 1997-99. PERSONAL: Sarah Elizabeth Gonzales was born on Nov. 10, 1981 in Albuquerque...daughter of Eloy and Debra Gonzales...has a brother, Eloy (24)...enjoys drawing, painting and sculpting...worked at the Majors Art Summer Institute...major is Fine Arts.
