NEW MEXICO:Two-year letterman on the cross country course who is one of the Lobos' top distance runners when healthy...has put together two outstanding cross country campaigns, but has been hampered by injuries during track season...could emerge as an XC all-conference candidate if able to continue his progression this year...older brother Nick (23), was a member of head coach Matt Henry's first recruiting class and a standout distance runner for the Lobos from 2000-05.2004-05: (outdoor) Did not compete...(indoor) Redshirt season...(cross country) Was one of the most consistent runners on the greatest men's team in UNM history...ran in all seven meets, scoring five times...big time performance at the NCAA Mountain Regionals, running third on the team (40th overall) with a 10K time of 31:14.8 to help make up for the loss of No. 2 man Shadrack Kiptoo-Biwott...effort helped the Lobos' earn an at-large berth in the national championship field...also scored at the MWC Championships, finishing 30th overall...placed 12th in the first two meets of the year and ran a career-best 8K time of 25:50.1 at the Pre-Nationals meet... 2003-04: (outdoor) Redshirt season...(indoor) Competed in the 3,000 and mile at the Air Force Invitational...(cross country) Scored in four of his five races...ran second on the team in the season-opener and season-finale...finished eighth at the pre-conference meet...Academic All-MWC honoree... HIGH SCHOOL:Two-time New Mexico 3A state cross country champion at Pojoaque (N.M.) High School, under head coaches Allan Lockeridge and Pete Bowman...led the Elks to a pair of state titles in 2000 and `02...lost his shoe during the `02 state meet, but ran through the rocky terrain and won the race anyway...earned a place in the Sports Illustrated "Faces In The Crowd" section for his shoeless achievment...also captured the 3,200m title on the track in 2003...a five-year letterwinner in both track and cross country...member of the National Honor Society...PERSONAL:Born on November 18, 1984, in Santa Fe, N.M....age is 20...full name is Steven Miguel Martinez...son of Ron and Diane Martinez...enjoys skiing, rock climbing and rock climbing...major is Business.
