Mark Martinez is beginning his 17th season as a Lobo assistant coach and 16th under Rich Alday. In addition to hitting duties Martinez is in charge of the Lobo infielders. He is also the director of the UNM youth camps, a series of seminars offered each winter, spring and summer, which allow youngsters expert individual instruction and advice from Lobo coaches and guest speakers. Martinez gained valuable experience in the summers of 1993 and 1994 as head coach of the Mat-su Miners in the Alaska Summer League. The 42-year-old Martinez came to New Mexico in 1988 after a five-year stint at his alma mater, Mesa State College in Grand Junction, Colo. Martinez was an assistant coach at Mesa from 1984-88. Martinez played shortstop at Mesa from 1982-84 where he earned all-conference and all-district honors as a senior. He received his bachelor's degree in Physical Education in 1984. He completed his master's in Sports Administration from New Mexico in January of 1990. Born Dec. 18, 1961, in Aurora, Colo., Martinez graduated from Longmont (Colo.) High School in 1980. He and wife Jada Lucey Martinez, UNM's associate athletics director for development, have two children, a daughter, Marissa, and a son, Cade. Marissa was born on May 14, 1998 - the same day as UNM's WAC Tournament win over Grand Canyon in San Diego. Martinez was in Albuquerque coaching his baby into the world, then flew back to San Diego for the quarterfinals and semifinals of the tournament. Last summer, Cade was born on July 4. Martinez and Lucey were married in the summer of 2000. |
