Lobo Baseball Takes Two of Three From No. 1 Texas With 3-1 Win in Austin
Feb. 21, 2010
AUSTIN, Texas - Junior Mike Lachapelle scattered seven hits over six innings and junior Kenny Held had two RBIs as the University of New Mexico defeated the No. 1-ranked Texas Longhorns, 3-1 at Disch-Falk Field Sunday in Austin, Texas. New Mexico took two of three from the top-ranked Longhorns, improving its record to 2-1. Texas falls to 1-2.
"This is a great day for the Lobo baseball team," said head coach Ray Birmingham. "Disch-Falk Field is one of the hardest places to play in the country. It's a very hostile environment for visiting teams. Our kids showed no fear and played as hard as they could. Everyone of our players was focused on the task at hand and we got the job done."
Lachapelle (1-0), a transfer from Pima Community College, allowed just one run over six innings to earn the first win of his Division I career. Lachapelle faced scattered seven hits and fanned one.
For the second time this series, senior Edwin Carl was effective in relief. He pitched 2.1 innings of hitless ball, while striking out four of the nine batters he faced. On Friday, Carl did not allow a run in 3.2 innings.
Sophomore transfer Gera Sanchez got his first collegiate save by retiring the final two batters in the bottom of the ninth.
Held, a transfer from Central Arizona College, was 2-for-4 on the day with two RBIs. Senior Max Willett went 2-for-3 and scored two runs. For the second day in a row, freshman Alex Allbritton went 2-for-4.
Willett had a sensational weekend, going 7-for-11 with two doubles and a triple.
The last time the Lobos defeated a ranked team in back-to-back games was April 18-19, 2009, against No. 15 San Diego State.
The Lobos finish a four-game road trip at Texas Tech on Tuesday, Feb. 23 at 2 p.m. MT. For more information, visit www.GoLobos.com.
