Lobos Fall to Iowa 6-2 in 10 Innings
Feb. 23, 2013
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The University of New Mexico baseball team dropped its second extra-inning game of the season Saturday, losing to the University of Iowa (2-3) 6-2 in 10 innings in the Kleberg Bank College Classic.
The Lobos (2-3) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first but were unable to score the rest of the game and support junior Kevin Baumgartner’s fantastic start, which was the first of his career.
It was the second straight stellar performance for the junior out of Phoenix who allowed no runs on four hits in 5 2/3 innings while striking out two. In one start and one relief appearance this season Baumgartner has allowed only one run in 10 2/3 innings with as many strikeouts (eight) as baserunners allowed.
Both Lobo runs in the first came with two outs. Chase Harris was on second when Mitch Garver singled him home. It was the senior’s team-leading seventh RBI of the season. Garver proceeded to steal second and scored when Luke Campbell singled to right.
After that, however, the Lobo bats were held in check by the Hawkeyes’ starter Matt Dermody and reliever Taylor Kaufman as they scattered seven hits over the next nine innings.
In the seventh Iowa tied the game off the Lobo bullpen and also snapped the Lobo pitching staff’s streak of 21-straight scoreless innings. Despite losing the lead, it looked like the Lobos might still pull out the win as they threatened in both the eighth and ninth innings. In the eighth they had runners on first and second with one out, and then the bases were loaded with two outs, but pinch hitter Erik Suarez struck out to end the inning.
In the ninth freshman Sam Haggerty continued his hot play at the plate by leading off with a double. However, after a failed bunt attempt Josh Melendez hit a comebacker to the pitcher and Haggerty was thrown out at third to effectively end the threat. Iowa then went on to score four times off three Lobo relievers in the 10th to earn the win.
UNM finishes the Kleberg Bank College Classic Sunday morning with a game against the 16th-ranked Oklahoma Sooners at 8:30 MT. Senior Sam Wolff, who pitched brilliantly in his first start of the season last week against Oklahoma State, gets the start on the mound for the Lobos.
Notes: The 21-inning scoreless streak is the longest for the Lobo pitching staff since prior to the 2009 season ... Haggerty is leading the team in hitting through five games with a .429 average … he also leads in on-base percentage, getting on at a .600 clip … Harris, Garver, and Campbell all stole a base in the first inning and as a team the Lobos are a perfect 5-for-5 on the season.
