No. 13 Nebraska Tops Lobo Baseball, 7-3
April 5, 2004 LINCOLN, Neb. - The 13th-ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers snapped the New Mexico baseball team's four-game winning streak, defeating the Lobos, 7-3, in front of 3,197 Monday night at Hawks Field. Junior centerfielder Matt Young went 2-for-5 for UNM with two runs and a double, while Sean Murray also collected two hits and an RBI. The Lobos (10-17-1) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first on a Joe Salas RBI single that plated Young. The lead was shortlived as the Huskers (22-5) answered right back in the bottom of the first with three runs, although they didn't get any hits in the inning. A hit batter with the bases loaded, a sacrifice fly and an RBI groundout gave Nebraska the 3-1 advantage. UNM trimmed the margin to 3-2 in the second as Young doubled and then scored on an error by Husker second baseman Jake Mullinax. But that's as close as the Lobos would get. The Huskers took a commanding 7-2 lead in the third as John Grose hit a grand slam to left field. Grose collected five RBI in the game. New Mexico scored the last run of the game in the fifth on a Murray RBI single that drove in Josh Mader. Darren Coltrinari (1-2) took the loss for UNM, while Quinton Robertson improved to 3-4 for NU.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow in Lincoln at 1:35 p.m. CT.
