Lobo Baseball Loses Heartbreaker to No. 9/8 Arkansas, 4-3 in 11 Innings

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The University of New Mexico Lobo baseball team gave No. 9/8 Arkansas, all it could handle in a 4-3, 11 inning loss at Baum Stadium tonight. The Lobos had the Razorbacks on the ropes after scoring two runs in the top of the tenth to go on top 3-1. But it wasn't to be this night as the Razorbacks came back with two runs in the tenth and a walk-off single in the 11th to win 4-3. The Lobos fall to 21-12 on the season. Arkansas improves to 27-6.
"I'm proud to be a Lobo," said Lobo head coach Ray Birmingham. "This is the best team that Arkansas has had in some time according to Coach Van Horn and one pitch decided the ball game. I'm proud of the team's effort and their heart."
Lobo hitters got three runs off nine hits off four Razorback pitchers. Arkansas is ranked No. 24 nationally, giving up 8.77 hits per game.
In the top of the tenth inning the Lobos broke a 1-1 tie when junior Ryan Honeycutt reached on a fielders choice that allowed senior Daniel Gonzalez to score from third base. With the score 2-1, senior Adam Courcha scored on an error by Arkansas second baseman Bo Bigham to make the score 3-1.
Courcha got the Lobos on the board in the Lobo side of the sixth inning and tied the game at 1-1 with a double that scored Gonzalez.
The Lobos gave up two runs in the bottom of the tenth inning that tied the game at three. Arkansas pinch-hitter Tom Hauskey hit a bases-loaded single to end the game at 4-3.
Sophomore Gera Sanchez (2-2) took the loss for the Lobos and gave up one run on four hits.
