Albuquerque, N.M. -- At Lobo Field Monday, New Mexico Highlands jumped on New Mexico starter Aaron Smith for 8 runs and fended off a late New Mexico rally to beat the Lobos for only the second time in its last 16 tries.

Trailing 12-9 in the bottom of the 9th, the Lobos put a run on the board when Sean Murray, who had homered earlier in the game, hit a double down the left field line to score Chris Alexander. Cory Lizarraga's sacrifice fly to right field scored baserunner Josh Huwer, but Lawson Burnat went down swinging to end the Lobos' rally.

The Lobos fall to 3-3 overall, while Highlands improved to 1-6.

Smith went four innings for New Mexico, yielding 8 runs on 8 hits. The Cowboys led 10-6 in the top of the 6th inning, when the Lobos mounted a rally at the bottom half of the inning, scoring three runs to bring the score to 10-9. Derek Neuenschwander ripped a solo shot off of New Mexico reliever Kris Gross in the eighth, and in the top of the ninth, Mike Svetlic, replacing an injured Josh Mader at third base, bobbled a tricky hopper by Mark Soriano that scored Marcos Ramos for the Cowboys' 12th run.

The Lobos are back in action Friday, February 14 at the UT-Arlington Invitational in Texas. Game results can be found at GoLobos.com. )
