Right fielder Sean Murray of the University of New Mexico baseball team has been named Mountain West Conference Player of the Week based on his performance over the weekend.

Murray, from Albuquerque, N.M. (Academy HS), went 7-for-18 from the plate last week, and was instrumental in helping the Lobos to wins over Northwestern University, the University of Texas-Arlington and New Mexico State University.

He was 3-for-7 with a double and three RBI in UNM's 6-5 win over Northwestern. His last RBI came on a game-winning single in the bottom of the 13th inning to give the Lobos their first win of the weekend.

Against UT-Arlington Saturday, Murray was 3-for-5 with a home run, a double, four RBI and two runs scored in a 17-12 New Mexico win.

Then in UNM's game with New Mexico State, Murray closed out the series by going 1-for-6 with four RBI and driving in the winning run, in a 10-9 win against the Aggies.

For the week, Murray hit .388, drove in 11 runs and scored three runs of his own. He also had two doubles.

Murray also currently has a 15-game hitting streak going. He had only 14 hits all of last season and 14 hits in his freshman year for the Lobos. Murray currently leads all Lobo hitters with a .457 batting average and 29 RBI.

He began the year as a role player but has quickly emerged as a clutch player and hitter for New Mexico, as the team has jumped out to its best record after 19 games (13-6) since the 1993 season.

Murray's award is his first honor from the Mountain West and the Lobos' third this season. Pitcher James Vermilyea and Chris Alexander have both been awarded pitcher and player of the week honors this season. A
