Provo, Utah -- In Provo, Dusty Young’s hitting streak ended at 39 games, but the Lobos kept winning, handing Brigham Young University a key 6-5 Mountain West Conference defeat.

James Vermilyea was masterful on the mound for the Lobos, pitching a complete game while allowing seven hits and four earned runs, and Joe Salas and Jeff Grady combined for all six of the Lobos’ RBI. The win moved UNM into sole possession of 2nd place in the conference, as Utah got a win over San Diego State earlier in the day. The Lobos improved to 27-15 overall, 10-6 in the MWC and have won four-straight games. BYU fell to 17-17 overall, 9-7 in conference games.

Grady homered in the 2nd inning, a three-run shot over left field, and Salas put some insurance runs on board in the 5th with a two-out, two-run shot to give the Lobos their fifth and sixth runs of the day to break a 4-all tie. It was Grady’s 7th home run and Salas’ 12th home run of the year. Vermilyea moved to 5-1 overall and posted his third complete game of the season.

Vermilyea only really got in trouble in the 3rd inning as Ryan Chambers homered and Ranger Wiens tripled, then scored on a wild pitch. Vermilyea then held the Cougars scoreless in the 8th and 9th innings after they put up a final run in the 7th.

The two teams meet again Friday evening at 7 p.m. in Provo. The game can be heard or followed via webcast at www.byucougars.com. Results can be found at GoLobos.com
