DJ Peterson Named First Team Rawlings All-American

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - University of New Mexico sophomore third baseman DJ Peterson continues to rack up the accolades for his tremendous 2012 season. He was named a first team Rawlings All-American by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) on Wednesday, his third first team All-American nod this year.
He was also named a first team All-Midwest Region player by the ABCA while teammate Mitchell Garver was named to the second team. The players shared Mountain West Player of the Year honors this season.
Peterson, who is one of only five underclassmen on ABCA's 17-man first team, hit .419 with 17 home runs and 78 RBIs to become only the third player in Mountain West history to win the league's overall triple crown. His 182 total bases led the nation.
He was named both a Golden Spikes Award semifinalist and a Dick Howser Trophy semifinalist and is a member of USA Baseball's Collegiate National Team. He was named a first team All-American by both Collegiate Baseball newspaper and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
Garver hit .377 with 10 home runs and 57 RBIs and led the Lobos with 68 runs and 27 doubles. He also led all Division I catchers during the regular season in hits, batting average, runs, total bases, and tied for the lead in doubles.
He was named a third team All-American by the NCBWA, a second team All-American by Collegiate Baseball and is one of three finalists for the Johnny Bench Award. The award is given annually to the nation's top collegiate catcher based on athletic ability, sportsmanship, team leadership, and character. The winner will be announced at the 15th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 28, 2012.
The Lobos went 37-24 this season and won their first regular-season Mountain West championship since 2000, their second straight Mountain West Tournament championship, and made their third consecutive NCAA postseason appearance.
