More All-American Honors for Peterson, Garver
June 22, 2012
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - In what is now seeming to be a daily occurrance, DJ Peterson and Mitchell Garver were named to another All-American team as Baseball America released its teams Friday. Peterson earned second team honors and Garver was named to the third team. This is the fourth All-American honor for Peterson this season and the third for Garver.
Peterson, who won the Mountain West overall Triple Crown with a .419 average, 17 home runs, and 78 RBIs, was named a first team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, Collegiate Baseball newspaper, and the American Baseball Coaches Association. He was named both a Golden Spikes Award semifinalist and a Dick Howser Trophy semifinalist and is a member of USA Baseball's Collegiate National Team.
Garver, who shared Mountain West Player of the Year honors with Peterson, hit .377 with 10 home runs and 57 RBIs and led the Lobos with 68 runs and 27 doubles. He also led all Division I catchers during the regular season in hits, batting average, runs, total bases, and tied for the lead in doubles.
He was named a third team All-American by the NCBWA, a second team All-American by Collegiate Baseball and is one of three finalists for the Johnny Bench Award. The award is given annually to the nation's top collegiate catcher based on athletic ability, sportsmanship, team leadership, and character. The winner will be announced at the 15th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 28, 2012.
The Lobos went 37-24 this season and won their first regular-season Mountain West championship since 2000, their second straight Mountain West Tournament championship, and made their third consecutive NCAA postseason appearance.
