Stevens: Lobos Quiet Nevada 75-62 To Set Up Huge Game With Air Force

The Steve Alford Lobos shot a season-high 56 percent from the floor to beat Nevada 75-62 Saturday in The Pit. A win Wednesday over Air Force would allow UNM to reach the halfway mark of the Mountain West race with an impressive 7-1 mark. A Falcon win creates a tie.

Albuquerque, N.M. --- The New Mexico Lobos have finished cutting down the nets, and they have finished celebrating a fourth Mountain West regular season championship. Now it's on to the rest of the unfinished business as the team heads out for the final two road games of the season, starting on Wednesday night with the first meeting ever for the team at Nevada.

The game will be shown nationally on CBS Sports Network, with Andrew Catalon and Steve Lappas on the call. Lauren Gardner will handle sideline duties.

As UNM heads to Reno, they take with them another Mountain West Player of the Week honoree, as Alex Kirk earned the award yesterday, sharing it with Derrick Marks of Boise State. It was each the third Player of the Week award for Kirk and Marks, which leads the league.

Kirk averaged 20.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.5 blocks and 1.5 assists as New Mexico defeated San Diego State and Wyoming to clinch the 2012-13 MW regular-season title. In Wednesday's 70-60 win over the Aztecs, Kirk scored a season-high 25 points on 8-of-12 shooting (.667), including 3-of-3 from 3-point range. The 7-footer also blocked three shots, had three assists and pulled down seven rebounds. Against the Cowboys on Saturday, Kirk was again the Lobos' high scorer, this time with 15 points. He also added a team-best nine rebounds and two blocks. Kirk finished the week shooting .560 from the field (14-of-25), including 4-of-6 from 3-point range, and was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line.

The Lobos, ranked No. 12 in the AP Poll and No. 11 in the USA Today/Coaches Poll, will be looking for their eighth road win of the year, and a 16th in the last two years, which would tie the school record for most road wins in back-to-back years. UNM is also looking to keep up its NCAA Tournament resume. New Mexico has a 25-4 record, a 10-3 record away from home, and an RPI of 2 and a schedule strength of 3. The Lobos are a whopping 17-4 against the RPI top 100, four wins ahead of Duke, Louisville, Miami, and Kansas, who all are second with 13.
