Roman Martinez Named Co-MWC Player of The Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - New Mexico junior Roman Martinez and BYU sophomore Jimmer Fredette have been named the Mountain West Conference Men's Basketball Co-Players of the Week. Martinez, a 6-foot-6 forward from El Paso, Texas, led the Lobos to wins at San Diego (57-54) and against Mississippi (103-70). At San Diego, he scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds. Martinez shot 5-for-8 from the floor, including hitting 2-of-4 shots from beyond the arc. Against Mississippi, he collected his second career double-double with 17 points and a career-high 12 rebounds (eight offensive). Martinez's eight offensive boards were the most for a Lobo player since Danny Granger grabbed eight during the 2004-05 season. Martinez also established a career-high in steals (5), while dishing out four assists vs. the Rebels. On the week, he averaged 15.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2.0 assists per game while shooting 57.1 percent from the floor (12-for-21) and 50.0 percent from three-point range (5-for-10). A 6-foot-2 guard from Glenn Falls, N.Y., Fredette averaged 20.0 points per game while shooting 72.7 percent from the field (16-for-22) and 87.5 percent from the charity stripe in helping BYU to wins against Boise State (94-56) and Portland (91-76) last week. He started the week scoring a career-high 23 points on 10-of-15 shooting, while tying a career-best with four steals vs. Boise State. Fredette also tallied two assists vs. the Broncos. Against Portland, Fredette scored 17 points (6-for-7 from the field), while also collecting three rebounds, three assists and two steals.
