We are back in Indiana this week for Coach Neal's Celebrity Golf Classic in Fort Wayne. It has been a tremendous success over the past six years and it keeps getting better. He has rounded up celebrities such as Bobby Huggins, Mike Miller, Brian Cardinal, Bob Hill, Mark Randall and Dane Fife. This year he will add Tom Izzo and Morris Peterson to the list.

Coach Neal's golf tournament is held at the end of August every year at Autumn Ridge Golf Club in Fort Wayne, Ind. Over the past six years it has rapidly become one of the top celebrity golf tournaments. With all proceeds benefiting children and no administrative payroll it is easy to see why so many celebrities and donors feel so strongly about the event. We hope to have some photos and more information about how this year's tournament went early next week so be sure to check back to Golobos.com.

  • 2008 6th Man Trip Day 2 Photo Gallery

The 2008 6th Man trip ended like it began, with another great day of golf. Today's 18 was played at Rainmakers, between Ruidoso and Capitan. This was a tough course today, with a 691-yard par-5 right off the bat. That is assuming you play the black tees. It was a little more reasonable from the blues and the golds. The scenery here was spectacular and I know everyone enjoyed it. There is another photo gallery above, but I did miss two groups. I played with Bernie Butterfield, Doug Vaughan and Gary Chilcoat and Coach Walker played with Kurt Roth, John Perner and Joe Zazula. We got shots of all of the other groups and they are in the gallery. Remember, if you are interested in joining the 6th Man Club call our office at (505) 925-5750. We are always looking for new members and we plan to do even more with the group in the years to come. Keep checking back to our website as we post more information and upcoming events involving the 6th Man Club.

One last thing, we came back through Carrizozo and the Valley of Fires. There was a storm moving in from the west and the view was unbelievable. If you have ever made that drive along 380, you know exactly what I am talking about. It was another addition to the long list of beautiful scenery in New Mexico that I have enjoyed in just over a year of living here.

  • 2008 6th Man Trip Day 1 Photo Gallery

We have had a great day on the course so far. I am actually running in quick enough to throw up a few pics and get back after it for an afternoon round of 18 before dinner. The 6th Man trip is going great at the Inn of the Mountain Gods in Ruidoso, N.M. The cool day led to some low scores and good times on the course. Some of us are gearing up for a second 18 so I am going to make this quick. The pic below is of the entire group on the practice green. The photo gallery above includes all of the groups from today. Remember, if you are interested in getting involved with the 6th Man Club, call our office anytime after Tuesday at (505) 925-5750. You have to wait until at least Wednesday, because Yolanda, is on the course with us until then.

The Mountain West Conference released the rest of our schedule today. Right now there are a total of 18 games slated for television broadcast. We currently have 12 on The Mtn., three on Versus and three on CBS College Sports. We hope to add even more in the future. Don't forget that The Mtn. is now available on DirectTV, so there are plenty of ways to get our games.

This time of year always makes me think about my Olympic experience. Winning the gold medal in 1984, was a great accomplishment in my career and something I will never forget. I always love talking about it because it was such a fun time in my life. There are a few articles and interviews out there that you might be interested in where I talk about my Olympic experience:
`84 Created Golden Memories - Albuquerque Journal
Alford Recalls His Gold Medal Memories - GoLobos.com

I also reently did an interview with KOB-TV in Albuquerque. The entire 15 minute piece is avaiable online. I could have talked even longer but I think they ran out of tape.

I was surprised to see how much stuff about the 1984 Olympic Team had been put on YouTube. There is footage of the team going against an All-Star squad of Indiana Alumni. There is also a short clip that includes me getting introduced before one of the games at the trials. There is another great clip that shows the team playing against a group of NBA All-Stars in Phoenix, Ariz. By the way, we won all seven of those games against the NBA players. Finally, there is also a clip of all of the U.S. players and coaches on the podium getting their medals as the National Anthem plays.

Things are somewhat quiet around the office right now. The guys are in the middle of a three-week break between summer school and the start of the fall semester. They all are at home with their families and enjoying a little R&R. The new freshmen report back to campus on Aug. 18 while the vets return on Aug. 22. I hope all of the Lobo fans are as excited about the upcoming year as we are. We have put together a great schedule that will certainly test a roster that includes seven freshmen.

We are taking advantage of this time to get out in the community as much as we can. I had a great time Monday playing in the Swing Fore the House Golf Tournament at Tanoan Country Club. The event benefitted the New Mexico Ronald McDonald House. As you can see from the picture below, I have some big shoes to fill anytime I get involved with Ronald McDonald. In case you were wondering, that's Miss New Mexico 2008, Joan Marie Yazze-Gallegos, on the right. We all had a lot of fun supporting the Ronald McDonald House and I am always up for a round of golf.

This is a great charity my family and I have been involved with everywhere we have lived. The Ronald McDonald House has been providing a home away from home for families with critically ill children that come to Albuquerque to access essential medical care they can't get in their own communities for over 25 years. Since the House opened in 1982, they have helped over 30,000 families in the state. If you are interested in getting involved with the Ronald McDonald House Charities of New Mexico, their contact information is below.
