Congrats to J.R. for getting selected in the first round of the NBA Draft by the Boston Celtics last night. It was a great end to our first year at UNM and I am sure all Lobo fans wish him the best of luck as he begins his professional career.

This summer is progressing nicely as we prepare for the second year of rebuilding the tradition rich Lobo basketball program. We are in the process of the getting our recruits acclimated to college life at UNM and Albuquerque. The first day of the fall semester will be here before you know it and then it is only weeks before the start of practice. In the mean time, we are all enjoying our summer here in the Land of Enchantment.

I wanted to let you know about a great event coming up next month on July 20-21. I will be heavily involved with the Special Olympics of New Mexico Golf Classic and Sports Auction at Four Hills Country Club in Albuquerque. The Sports Auction will take place on Sunday, July 20, at Four Hills and we will be playing golf the following day. There are two golf sessions with the morning rounds starting at 7:30 a.m. and the afternoon session beginning at 1:00 p.m.

If you are interested, please click here for a brochure or you can call the Special Olympics of New Mexico at (505) 856-0342. Hope to see you out there supporting the Special Olympics of New Mexico. Go Lobos!

Congratulations are in order for Chad Toppert and Roman Martinez. They both earned Academic All-Mountain West Conference Honors last week. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic term at the member institution while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, and be a starter or significant contributor on their athletic team. We are very proud of Chad and Roman's work on the court as well as in the classroom.

Just a few quick updates on what is going on around Lobo basketball. We just finished our Elite Camp and it was a huge success. We had a great mix of local, regional and national talent and it was a fun event to put on. We also had a great turnout for our individual skills camps earlier in the month and we hope to see both of these events become more popular the longer we are here.

We just hired a familiar face to Lobo fans to replace Silvey Dominguez as our Director of Operations. Duane Broussard will joins our staff beginning July 1 and will be a welcome addition. He brings 14 years of Division I coaching experience and will be a valued asset for the entire staff. My relationship with Duane goes back to our days in the Missouri Valley Conference when he was an assistant coach at Bradley and I was the coach Missouri State. For the record, the Bears held a 6-5 advantage over the Braves during the time we went head-to-head in the Valley.

Seriously though, I have always felt that the Operations position needs to be filled by someone who is familiar with New Mexico and the proud tradition of Lobo basketball. Duane definitely meets both of those job requirements.

I am off to Franklin, Ind., next week for my basketball camp at my father's alma mater Franklin College. Franklin is like a home town to me and I really enjoy getting back there and putting on a camp each summer. For more information on the camp click here.
