I had a great experience last weekend when I was able to get back to my hometown, Newcastle, Ind. It was the silver anniversary of our 1983 Newcastle Chrysler High School basketball team that made it to the final eight of the Indiana state basketball tournament. I had a lot of fun being back in the Newcastle Chrysler Fieldhouse and seeing a lot of my old friends.

I quickly realized how long it had been when I was about to be introduced and the cheerleaders kept asking, `which one is Steve.' That place is still one of my favorite gyms of all time. It seats over 10,000 and we sold it out every game in my senior year of high school.

I am getting to see that same passion each game here in The Pit as the season goes on. I love the crowds we are getting and hope that they continue to grow. We have two tough road games this weekend and right now our team's focus is on Ole Miss. They are a tough opponent who likes to push the tempo offensively. They are 5-0 on the year and average over 90 points per game. It is going to take a solid effort on the defensive end for us to get a win.

I think the Thanksgiving break was good for us, and I hope everyone enjoyed their's. We have got some guys battling some illnesses and things, but I think it was really good to get some time off. It gave them a chance to get home and see their families. I got a chance to go home to Newcastle (Indiana), which was really fun.

We are excited about our upcoming stretch of games. It is going to be different from the first part of the season where we had a lot games crunched together. These are going to be more spread out and the competition definitely strengthens from this point on.

We host Southern Utah on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. and I hope to see everyone wearing red in The Pit. The Thunderbirds are 1-4 on the season but this is a team that scares me because they want the ball going inside every time down. They are averaging four made 3s per game, so they are not wanting to shoot the three...they are wanting to hammer the ball down low. That's going to test us. Not just our inside guys, but our guards are going to have to defend the post as well.

One last thing, Wednesday's game is sponsored by Susan G. Komen for the Cure. You will see a lot of gameday staff wearing pink shirts to raise awareness for breast cancer. For more information on Susan G Komen for the Cure, visit www.komen.org.

Yesterday we had some members of the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Central New Mexico come to practice. We got to take some pictures with them and had them out on the court to take a few shots on The Pit floor. All of us had a lot of fun. The group will also be recognized before tonight's game against Hawai'i. BBBS will be also on the concourse to discuss the services they offer and how people can get involved with the organization. Last night was a big win for us. Anytime you can go into a Big 12 arena and hold them to 47 points, it has to be a big confidence boost for the team. Last year, our vets had trouble closing out road games, so it was good for them to withstand Colorado's late run and close out the game.

I was impressed with our defensive effort and we met most of our defensive goals for the game. We held them to under 65 points (47), we held them to under 40% shooting from the field (34.1%), we won on the boards (34-29) and we didn't allow anyone to score 20 points. When we do that, we should have a good chance to win.

We also like to break the game down into 10 four-minute segments and try to win as many of those as we can. Last night we won eight of those segments, tied one and lost one. We also try to hold teams to no more than six points in each of those segments and we did that for most of the night.

I was also proud of the fact that we took five charges in the game. Jamaal had two and J.R., Darren and Monquel had one each. We certainly need to shoot free throws better and we have to take better care of the ball, but overall I was very pleased with our effort.

Now we have to get back home and get ready for a run of five games in 10 days. We have our home opener against Eastern Washington on Monday night at 7:00 p.m. and I hope to see The Pit packed with a sea of Lobo fans all wearing red.

Jerseys are here. We got our official uniforms for tonight's game against Colorado. I think Lobo fans are going to like them.
