Danny Gonzales is in his third season as a member of the coaching staff, but he has been affiliated with the Lobo football program since 1994. Gonzales coaches the safeties and punters. He spent three years (2003-05) in charge of the UNM video department before joining the coaching staff in 2006. Gonzales recruits the Albuquerque metro area, Arizona and Utah. Senior strong safety OJ Swift was a team captain and second team all-league pick in 2007 while sophomore lobo Ian Clark led the team with 79 tackles. Senior lobo/safety Quincy Black was named first team all-Mountain West in 2006 after totaling a team-high 114 tackles and 3 interceptions. Black was a 3rd-round draft pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2007. Gonzales has been associated with the New Mexico football program for the past 13 years, including two seasons (2001-02) as a graduate assistant coach for the UNM defense. After graduating from UNM in 1998 with a bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Gonzales was an academic intern for two years. He earned his master's degree in Sports Administration from UNM in May of 2002. Playing punter and safety at UNM, Gonzales was a three-year letterman from 1996-98 and was a member of New Mexico's 1997 Western Athletic Conference Mountain Division championship team. Gonzales was a walk-on his first four years before being placed on scholarship prior to his senior season. The epitome of a team player, Gonzales earned the Chuck Cummings Memorial Award for morale and spirit and the Lobo Club Award for unselfish devotion following his senior season. Gonzales punted four times in his career for a 41.3-yard average. He still holds the school record for kickers with a 485-pound squat lift. A very community-minded student-athlete, Gonzales spent numerous hours making appearances at local high schools where he talked to youngsters about the importance of education and athletics. The 32-year-old Gonzales is a 1994 graduate of Albuquerque Valley High School. Gonzales and his wife Lea have a daughter, Alicia. |
