NEW MEXICO: Up-and-coming defensive end who showed flashes of dominance playing mostly nose tackle in 2007...will open training camp as the new starter at his preferred position of right end, replacing first team all-MWC honoree Tyler Donaldson...outstanding quickness and athletic ability for his size and very smart player as well...coaches say he has the potential to be one of the best in the conference as he continues to gain experience and become a more physical player up front...has worked very hard on and off the field to put himself in position for a breakthrough 2008 campaign...lost 20 pounds in the offseason, trimming down to 270 pounds to increase his mobility on the edge...didn't sacrifice his strength in the weight room, however...has squatted 510 pounds, put up 328 in the power clean and 365 in the bench press...an accomplished kick-off man in high school and can also deep snap...competed briefly in the shot put for the UNM track team during the `07 indoor and outdoor seasons...former prep teammates Ian Clark (Jr.) and Yousuf Shakir (Sr.) also play for UNM. 2007 (SOPHOMORE): Played in all 13 games, rotating off the bench at nose tackle and as one of the personal protectors for the punt team...17 tackles (10 solo)...2.5 tackles for loss and 1 solo sack, all coming in the final 3 games of the year...also had two pass deflections at the line of scrimmage and 2 QB hurries. 2006 (FRESHMAN): Played in 5 games and saw significant time in the final 3...finished with 4 tackles (3 solo), including 2 solo tackles for loss, and a QB hurry in limited action. HIGH SCHOOL: A 2005 graduate of Albuquerque Highland HS...first team all-state pick at defensive tackle and offensive guard for the Hornets...a 3-year starter on both sides of the ball for head coach Judge Chavez...also spent 3 years as Highland's punter and kicker, including some PAT duties...HHS finished 9-3 and advanced to the state semifinals in Class 5A in 2004...one of the best shot putters in the state throughout his prep career...winner of the George J. Maloof Memorial Scholarship, presented to Albuquerque's most outstanding high school boy and girl student-athletes...the award is based on athletics, academics and extra-curricular activities...had a 4.233 cumulative GPA...also worked with mentally and physically disabled students.
