NEW MEXICO:
Three-year letterman who will move into the starting lineup this year opposite Gabriel Fulbright at left cornerback...has started 8 games over the past two years and coaches are confident in his ability to play at a high level right away in his new full-time role...coaches say he had the best spring of any Lobo corner and is entering the season with a higher level of confidence...knows the system and should be a much more aggressive playmaker in 2005...started the first four games of 2003 at right CB before giving way to Brandon Payne, who later went on to earn All-America honors after leading the nation in passes defended last year...coaches say he is further along than Payne was entering his senior season and could surprise the league in a similar fashion this fall...possesses tremendous speed, athletic ability, has good size and can be a physical player...has clocked a 4.43 in the 40...has worked hard to improve his strength in the offseason...increased his max in all 4 core lifts this past spring...moved over from safety in the spring of `03 and quickly made himself at home on the corner...first name is pronounced juh-RELL...hometown is pronounced rah-LETT.
2004 (JUNIOR):
Was New Mexico's 3rd cornerback and the first man off the bench when opponents went to 3 or 4 WR sets...replaced ILB Chrishone Harris in those situations, allowing starting CB Gabriel Fulbright to shift inside over the slot WR...saw his role increase dramatically over the final month of the year, while his level of performance steadily improved as well...27 stops in 11 games, including starts vs. Washington State, Utah and San Diego State...
at Colorado State...Played 29 snaps off the bench and did another solid job in coverage...deflected 2 deep passes, a career-high, and nearly had a diving interception on the sideline...
vs. San Diego State...Saw extensive action in his 3rd start...covered the outside receiver virtually the entire game, allowing Gabriel Fulbright to shift inside...solid job in coverage and did not allow any big plays in 65 snaps...finished with 5 tackles (4 in the 2nd half) and made several good open field stops...
vs. Texas Tech...Came on in midway through the second quarter following starter Gabriel Fulbright's ejection and had a solid effort in relief...gave up a TD at the end of the 1st half, but rebounded with a strong second half...made all five tackles after the break and did a nice job in man coverage...
2003 (SOPHOMORE):
30 tackles (17 solo), 2 PBUs and forced fumble in 13 games, including 5 starts at corner...had a fumble recovery on punt coverage and also made a pair of big recoveries on UNM muffed punt returns vs. Washington State and New Mexico State to prevent Lobo turnovers...
Oregon State (Las Vegas Bowl)...Got in on 5 tackles, including .5 for loss...
Colorado State...Made his first start in 6 games, opposite Brandon Payne...finished with 4 tackles (3 solo), including the first tackle for loss of his career...was flagged for interference in the endzone early in the game, but came back later to break up a potential 3rd quarter TD pass on 3rd-and-13 from the UNM 23-yard line...
Utah State...No tackles, but had a momentum-shifting fumble recovery in punt coverage to set up the Lobos' first TD of the game...
Washington State...Six stops, including 4 solo, in 62 snaps...
Texas Tech...Career-high 7 tackles and a forced fumble in an up-and-down performance...stripped Tech WR Nehemiah Glover midway through the 4th quarter...Lobos recovered and scored 7 plays later to cut the Red Raider lead to 35-28...also had an acrobatic first half pass deflection in the endzone...
Texas State...Three tackles in 60 plays in his first career start
