Both programs are looking to change losing cultures and seek a season-ending, feel-good win
NEW MEXICO:Former walk-on who improved every season and became an integral member of the defense in 2012 ... nominated in 2012 for the Bulworth Award, which goes to the nation's best player who began his career as a walk-on ... his work ethic in film and playbook study helped him become a starter and a playmaker his senior season ... was so valuable to the defense that coach Bob Davie was quoted as saying "I can win with a team full of Matt Raymers" ... one of those key in-state players whose attitude and leadership were instrumental in the locker room ... joined the team in the spring of 2009 ... earned special teams playing time in 2011 ... an Academic All-Mountain West selection in 2011 ... was named the Scout Team Defensive Player of the Year award winner in 2010.
2011 (SENIOR): Played in 11 games with 10 starts, missing games against New Mexico State and Boise State because of an injury ... led the team in tackles per game at 7.5, which also ranked eighth in the Mountain West ... earned All-MW honorable mention honors after recording 83 tackles, eight tackles for loss, two sacks four forced fumbles and one interception ... the four forced fumbles tied for sixth best in the nation ... capped his Lobo career by recording a team-high 12 tackles in the season finale at Colorado State ...playing as the New Mexico Man on Nov. 17 against Nevada, he led the team with nine solo tackles and tied for the team lead with 12 total tackles ... recorded two tackles for a loss, including his second career sack, broke up his first pass of the season, and forced the fourth fumble of his career versus the Wolf Pack ... made one solo tackle and assisted on another against Wyoming on Nov. 10 ... earned Honorable Mention National Defensive Back Player of the Week by College Football Performance Awards for his play against UNLV on Nov. 3 ... he led all Lobos with nine total tackles (five solo, four assist) against the Rebels ... intercepted the first pass of his career at the end of the first half against UNLV and returned it 17 yards ... forced a fumble that teammate Joe Stoner recovered to halt the Rebels' opening drive in the first quarter and later forced his second fumble of the game in the third quarter ... led UNM in tackles for the second straight game with 11 against Fresno State on Oct. 27 ... led the Lobos with nine solo tackles against Air Force on Oct. 20 ... returned to action after missing two games and led all Lobos with eight tackles (six solo, two assist), including one for a loss, against Texas State on Oct. 6 ... had a fantastic game at No. 17 Texas on Sept. 8, leading the team in tackles ... made six solo tackles and assisted on two others ... recorded the first sack of his career against the Longhorns and also forced a fumble ... made the first start of his career against Southern on Sept. 1 ... recorded one solo tackle for a loss against the Jaguars ... assisted on three other tackles vs. Southern.
2011 (JUNIOR):Appeared in seven games, including the last five in a row...finished with two tackles on the season.
HIGH SCHOOL:A 2008 graduate of Albuquerque Manzano High School...lettered in football and wrestling...second-team all-state and first team all-metro defensive back his senior year for head coach Aaron Ocampo...also runner-up in his weight class at the class 5A state wrestling tournament in `08...three-year academic letterman.
