NEW MEXICO:Fifth-year punter who is in his second season as the starter after making his collegiate debut in 2006...had not played in an official game since his senior year of high school (2002) before the `06 season opener...spent his first three seasons as the understudy to four-year starter Tyler Gaus...has made significant improvement since 2004, increasing his distance and hang-time each year...a real team player who does an excellent job of eliminating returns and punting within his coverage even at the expense of his personal yardage average...has also rapidly improved in his first year handling kickoff duties this fall and can be used on long FGs if needed...added 12 pounds to his frame and made a big jump in the weight room over the past year...a redshirt in 2003, he paid his own way for three years before earning a scholarship in August of `062007 (SENIOR): Overcame a shaky start and is now turning in a career-year, emerging as a serious all-MWC candidate as the leader of the nation's 7th-ranked punting unit...averaging a career-best 41.9 yards on 30 punts with a long of 55...has used excellent hangtime and directional kicking to make his punts almost unreturnable through the first 6 games...has allowed just 7 returns for a total of 25 yards, giving UNM a net punting average of 39.0 - tops in the MWC...has put 12 kicks inside the 20 (T2nd MWC), including 5 inside the 10, with just 3 rolling into the end zone...5 punts of 50+ yards and has forced 12 fair catches (2nd MWC)...has been outstanding over the past 4 weeks: averaging 43.7 yards on 21 punts, sending 10 balls inside the 20 and forcing 11 fair catches for a net average of 42.0 yards...took over kickoff duties in week 2 and has averaged 64.0 yards with 5 touchbacks to help UNM move up to 2nd in the MWC in kickoff coverage (43.3 net avg.).
`07 HIGHLIGHTS: vs. BYU...Averaged 41.5 yards on 8 punts and a season-best 68.8 yards per kickoff (3 touchbacks)...sent 1 punt inside the 20 and forced the Cougar punt returners into 5 fair catches. vs. Sacramento State...Just 2 punts in the offensive explosion, but both landed inside the 20, including a season-long 55-yarder on his first kick...2nd kick (44 yards) was fielded and fumbled by the Hornets at the 8-yard line, setting up a Lobo TD...also averaged 66.6 yards with a touchback on a career-high 11 kickoffs. at Arizona...Turned in a tremendous performance, helping the Lobos to a landmark road win...averaged 43.8 yards on his 6 punts and put 4 inside the 20...limited the Wildcat's explosive returner Antoine Cason to 1 return for 0 yards and 3 fair catches...his final 3 punts all went over 50 yards and landed inside the 20, including a pair of 52-yarders in the 4th quarter...also had a fine open field tackle to prevent a long kickoff return early in the game. 2006 (JUNIOR): Got off to a bit of a slow start, but punted with more consistency each week during the regular season, helping the Lobo defense in the weekly field position battle...finished with a 40.2-yard average on 70 punts (13 games), but averaged 41.0 yards/punt during the regular season...did an excellent job with hang-time throughout the year, forcing 20 fair catches...also showed pinpoint accuracy with the ball, dropping 19 kicks inside the 20-yard line, including 12 inside the 10, with only 4 rolling into the end zone...3 punts of 60+ yards, including a long of 68 which was the best by a Lobo since 2000...helped New Mexico finish 5th in the MWC in net punting (34.7 avg.)...didn't shy away from contact, recording 3 tackles (2 solo) in coverage. `06 HIGHLIGHTS: at No. 23 BYU...Tremendous effort, averaging 46.7 yards on his 3 punts...sent 2 kicks inside the BYU 20, including one to the 6-yard line...did a fine job of kicking within his coverage, helping limit dangerous Cougar return man Nathan Meikle to just 11 yards on his 3 run-backs...vs. Utah...Punted 4 times for an average of 43.8 yards, all in the first half...had 2 kicks of 50+ yards, including a 65-yarder that rolled to a stop at the Utah 5...at UNLV...Up-and-down performance as he recorded a season-best 47.2-yard average on 4 punts and had a long kick of 64 yards die at the UNLV 1 yard line...however, he also dropped a snap which resulted in a block that led to a 2nd quarter Rebel TD...vs. Wyoming...Finished with an average of 43.0 yards on 8 punts...first kick sailed a career-long 68 yards to the Cowboy 5-yard line...later dropped a 49-yarder on the Wyoming 3...vs. UTEP...Turned one of his best games, averaging 44 yards on 4 punts...long of 48 and killed two punts inside the UTEP 10-yard line...first punt of the game stopped at the UTEP 1-yard line and resulted in a safety three plays later...made a nice open field tackle on breakaway return man Johnnie Lee Higgins late in the game...vs. Missouri...Excellent job of pinning the Tigers deep in their own territory, dropping 2 of his 5 punts inside the 10-yard line...third punt of the night died at the Mizzou 9 and led to Michael Tuohy's 11-yard INT return for a TD on the ensuing play...averaged 40.2 yards/punt...at New Mexico State...Eliminated speedy Aggie punt returner Chris Williams by forcing 4 fair catches and downing another inside the 20-yard line...averaged 38.7 yards/punt with a long of 46.
