NEW MEXICO:
Three-year letterman who will battle for a starting job at inside linebacker during fall camp...former walk-on who has been an excellent special teams player for UNM over the past three years...was voted 2004 Special Teams Player of the Year by his teammates...38 career games...has good speed, is a sure tackler and has gotten bigger and stronger every year...improved in all 4 core lifts this past spring and earned the team's Beefmaster Award for players weighing between 201-225 pounds...345 bench, 500 squat, 323 power clean, 315 incline bench...played safety and receiver in high school...name is pronounced SEE-lander.
2004 (JUNIOR):
Played in all 12 games on special teams and spot defensive duty...finished with 11 tackles and scored his first career TD at Air Force...scooped up the ball following Martelius Epps' punt block and raced 46 yards, untouched down the sideline to cut the Falcon lead to 28-23 late in the fourth quarter...also recovered a third quarter fumble in kickoff coverage to set up a UNM score at Colorado State.
2003 (SOPHOMORE):
Outstanding special teams performer once again, appearing in all 13 games...logged 14 tackles (9 solo) in punt and kick coverage...career-high 3 tackles (2 solo) at Washington State, helping contain the Cougars' talented return men...also a fumble recovery in 3 defensive snaps at San Diego State
2002 (REDSHIRT FRESHMAN):
10 tackles on kick and punt coverage...played in 13 games...season-high 2 tackles vs. Texas Tech and Wyoming
HIGH SCHOOL:
A 2001 graduate of Rio Rancho HS...lettered in football and track...was a 4A second team all-state safety in 2000...all-district safety in 1999, 2000...also a second-team all-state receiver in 2000...played for coach Wilson Holland
