Tony White begins his first season as New Mexico's linebackers coach. White will recruit western New Mexico and Southern Cailfornia.

White, 28, came to UNM after spending the 2007 season at UCLA, working as a graduate assistant in football operations.

White's duties at UCLA included assisting with day-to-day operations and administration, recruiting administration, and providing professional football scouts with player information and videos.

White was recruited to UCLA by current UNM head coach Rocky Long when Long was the defensive coordinator with the Bruins.

White was a three-year starter (1998-2000) and four-year letterman at outside linebacker for UCLA. As a senior in 2000, he started all 12 games and made 64 tackles. He was awarded the N.N. Sugarman Award for Best Leadership and was also a team captain.

White spent four years playing for three teams in the Canadian Football League. In 2002, he was a member of the Calgary Stampeders. He then spent two and one-half years playing for the Ottawa Renegades and finished his career with the Hamilton Tiger-cats in 2005.

In 2006, White served as the head football coach at St. Genevieve High School in Panorama City, Calif., where he led the team to its best league record since 1993 and coached two first team All-CIF performers. He also served as the athletics director at Discovery Prep Charter School.

White graduated from UCLA in 2002 with a bachelor's degree in History. He also has received credits from UCLA towards a master's degree in Education.
