Stevens: Lots Of Things Go Wrong in Lobos' 72-0 Loss at Oregon

  • LoboTV: Highlights at OREGON
It was as if Lobo coach Mike Locksley had written down all the things that could go wrong in Eugene, Ore., and somehow they all came true. The New Mexico Lobos lost 72-0 Saturday afternoon to the No. 11 Oregon Ducks and the scoreboard more than fairly reflected the differences between the two teams on this day. Locksley had preached prior to the game that his Lobos could not step in front of a team this talented and this quick and help them by making mistakes. His words never made it to the field at Autzen Stadium. "One of the things we stressed going into the game was make them beat us," said Locksley, in his second season at UNM. "We turned it over five times and allowed two punt returns for touchdowns. We definitely didn't help our cause from our end."

Stevens: Lobos Eager To Face The Duck Trap in Oregon

On paper, it is a game, a stadium, a team that waits for New Mexico like a steel trap hiding in the path of a wolf. This season opener with Oregon will be a tough one for the Lobos. So many things are against them. The Oregon Ducks, for sure, are the nastiest thing in the Lobos' path. They are loaded, cocky, and hungry to crack out of that lowly No. 11 spot in the national rankings and soar into the Top Ten. "They are getting a lot of national hype and we know they are good," said Lobo defensive end Jaymar Latchison. "But we aren't going up there to roll over. They are going to have to beat us."

Stevens: High-Flying Ducks Picked To Soar Over Pac-10 Foes

The bonding, the focus, the chemistry that Lobo Coach Mike Locksley will be seeking to take to a higher level when he moves a portion of the Lobo fall drills to Ruidoso take on even a higher sense of urgency when you glance at the UNM 2010 schedule. It's a beast. It starts off tough. It maybe ends even tougher. It's not soft in the middle. Depending on how you evaluate the nasty foes awaiting Locksley's Lobos, you might say the Lobos start and finish with the two nastiest opponents on the schedule: Oregon and TCU. Both those teams are picked to win their league titles. UNM opens the season Sept. 4 at Oregon.
