New Mexico Falls to Oregon State 17-7
Sept. 18, 2004
CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) - Derek Anderson passed for 274 yards, Dwight Wright ran for 108 yards and Oregon State held off New Mexico 17-7 Saturday, despite more kicking problems for the Beavers.
Oregon State (1-2) outgained New Mexico 398-114 and had the ball for more than 38 minutes, but John Dailey missed field goals of 43 and 34 yards. Dailey replaced Alexis Serna as the Beavers No. 1 kicker after Serna missed three extra points in a 22-21 opening loss at LSU.
Serna replaced Dailey in the fourth quarter and kicked a 35-yard field goal.
New Mexico (1-2) never got going offensively.
Lobos quarterback Kole McKamey was 4-of-12 for 10 yards in the first half, but suffered a concussion and didn't suit up after halftime. Backup Tali Eni didn't fare much better, going 3-for-18.
Joe Newton had nine catches for 97 yards for Oregon State. Anderson completed 24 of 50 passes and didn't throw an interception, after having four picks in the Beavers' 53-34 loss at Boise State last week.
Oregon State shut down Lobos tailback DonTrell Moore for a second straight meeting, holding last season's Mountain West Conference leading-rusher to 22 yards. Moore ran for just 12 yards against the Beavers in a 55-14 loss last year in the Las Vegas Bowl.
New Mexico's lone touchdown was scored by its defense.
Anderson hooked up with Newton three times on a second-quarter drive that led to the Beavers' first touchdown at 12:44 in the second quarter. Anthony Wheat-Brown capped a 10-play, 67-yard drive with an 11-yard touchdown run just before halftime.
The Lobos, who nearly upset Washington State in their opener and then beat Texas Tech for the first time in 20 years last week, are 0-9 against Pac-10 schools, dating back to 1987.
Oregon State's Aric Williams intercepted an attempted halfback pass from Moore in the third quarter and ran it back to the New Mexico 14. But on third down Anderson had the ball knocked out of his hands by Josh Bazinet, who scooped it up and ran it back 70 yards for New Mexico's only score.
