Feb. 3, 2010
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- It's a great morning in Lobo Nation! 2010 National Football Signing Day is one of the biggest days in college football. Stay posted to GoLobos.com for live updates as signees start rolling in. The fax machines have been buzzing this morning and an excitement surrounds the UNM football offices. Coach Mike Locksley arrived just before 5 a.m. this morning and has been waiting for those NLIs. Good morning Lobo football fans! Chris Deal here, I'm one of the media relations contact for the UNM football team, along with Alfredo Moreno and Dave Lepre, and I'll be doing my best to keep you updated with signing day news and notes as it happens throughout the day on our second annual signing day blog on GoLobos.com. If you have any questions during the day, feel free to email me at cdeal@unm.edu and I'll do my best to answer them for you. Hope you're ready for an exciting and historic day for this program. This is Mike Locksley's second signing class as a head coach and a key squad in the renovation process. 2:30 p.m. - The class is nearly complete. One hour until the press conference. Check back on GoLobos.com for complete signing day information. We will have photos, video and quotes afterwards. I will update if another NLI comes across my desk. Great day to be a Lobo!. 2:02 p.m. - Great job by Alfredo Moreno and Dave Lepre. Alfredo has been the primary football contact at UNM since 2002 and is the force behind us. Lepre has been working with the coaching staff all day and kept us updated. Our coverage on GoLobos.com wouldn't be current without them.
1:50 p.m. - UNM has added WR Joshua Ford. Ford is listed at 6-3, 195 and is a three-star recruit. Ford will help replace holes left by Daryl Jones and Victor James. He had originally verbally committed to New Mexico. Teammate of Martize Barr who signed with UNM earlier today. He had offers from Kansas, Utah, Temple. Word is he is physically like Daryl Jones.
1:45 p.m. - UNM will host a special Lobo Talk Radio Show Thursday (Tomorrow) from 7-8 p.m. MT at Kelly's Brew Pub and Grill in Nob Hill. Coach Locksley will be live and talk about the class. Fans are encouraged to attend. It can also be heard on 770 KKOB and throughout the state on the Lobo Radio Network. 1:35 p.m. - Thank you all for following along today. It's been a lot of fun and hopefully informational for you. This is an awesome class and something the state should be proud of. Mike Locksley and staff busted their backsides to make this happen. I look forward to more wins and a bright future. I'll keep you posted on any new signees but we are close to being done. I hear a couple of names being thrown around but we will see. Reminder that if you want to hear coach Locksley talk about the recruiting class. He will be on a few local radio stations. The full list is below.
1:20 p.m. - Signing day at New Mexico is starting to wrap up. I still expect a name or two but we will see. The press conference is just over two hours away. Calvin Smith is getting all the national attention. I'm going back and filling in hometowns. That information is critical and helpful. It shows how far our coaches went to nab this OUTSTANDING class. 12:51 p.m. - Here is a story from the Birmingham News about Calvin Smith. Another notch in Mike Locksley's recruiting resume.
12:40 p.m. - Here are some big time links for Lobo Nation to read.
Smith is an active defender in the trenches. He lacks ideal bulk, but should be able to add more good size with time in a college weight program and still keep his mobility. He has a good get-off that allows him to be able to get penetration at times.
12:29 p.m. - Mike Locksley hit a home run with this one. Calvin Smith signs with New Mexico. It's official! Smith is the newest member of Lobo Nation. He is ranked the 20th defensive tackle in the nation. One of the biggest signees EVER at New Mexico. Announced on ESPN U around 11 a.m. today. Calvin Smith - 6-3 - 265 - Fr-HS - DL - Hialeah, Fla. (Hialeah HS) 12:23 p.m. - DB Ravonne Carter is now a Lobo. Carter according to Locksley has good size, good speed and is physical. Locksley said he has a nose for the football and runs really well. He is one of those defensive backs who is always around the football. Ravonne Carter - 5-11 - 186 - Fr-HS - DB - Hialeah, Fla. (Hialeah HS) 12:01 p.m. - Just got word that two more NLIs were faxed in. We will wait for word on these new Lobos. UNM has signed 14 recruits as of right now. 11:55 a.m. - New Mexico and schools from around the country continue to announce signees. Breaking news seems to be spreading throughout the state. Follow all the college football signing day action ESPN Signing Day Coverage
11:40 a.m. - Lobo head coach Mike Locksley will hold a press conference today at 3:30 p.m. MT. The press conference will be online shortly after for fans to view. 11:30 a.m. - Congrats to the Lobo coaching staff on this great class. They put in a lot of tireless hours and went far and way for these recruits. The class isn't complete but as we are finding out this staff can recruit. The whole department is buzzing about the new recruits and the future of Lobo football. Congrats coach Locksley and the staff. 11:23 a.m. - Big Time News In Lobo Nation! We are adding some great guys. 11:20 a.m. - WR Martize Barr is a Lobo! Barr is out of Washington, D.C., and Calvin Coolidge HS. Martize Barr - 5-11 - 187 - Fr-HS - WR - Washington, D.C. (Coolidge HS) 11:03 a.m. - Here is a breakdown on the latest signees. Stump Godfrey - 6-0 - 204 - Fr-HS - QB - Gilmer, Texas (Gilmer HS)
Zach Daugherty - 6-0 - 205 - Fr-HS - LB - Las Cruces, N.M. (Onate HS)
LaMar Bratton - 6-2 - 275 - Fr-HS - OL - Riverside, Calif. (John W. North HS) 10:51 a.m. - Three more names are added to the list. Lobo Nation should be happy with this class.
Darian "Stump" Godfrey - QB More information to come! 10:46 a.m. - It's official! Tarean Austin is a Lobo. Tarean Austin - 6-2 - 200 - Fr-HS - QB - Tampa, Fla. (Hillsborough HS) 10:39 a.m. - The UNM compliance office has five or six NLIs right now so hopefully we will be announcing more names soon. 10:27 a.m. - Here are two transfer guys added that are currently enrolled at UNM. Lamaar Thomas - 6-0 - 185 - Jr-Tr - WR - Ft. Washington, Md. (Ohio State) OHIO STATE: Two-year letterman for the Buckeyes, appearing in 23 games, mostly special teams, in his two seasons in Columbus....5 catches for 39 yards and a 6-yard run on offense...was Ohio State's primary kickoff returner both seasons...played in all 13 games and averaged 20.9 yards on a team-high 18 kickoff returns last fall for the Rose Bowl champion Buckeyes...appeared in 10 games and averaged 21.6 yards on a team-high 16 kick returns as a true freshman in 2008...finished fourth in the 100 meters (10.65) at the 2009 Big 10 Track Championships and helped the Buckeye's 4x100 relay team capture gold (40.55).
Omar Castillo - 6-5 - 260 - So-Tr - OL - Roswell, N.M. (Texas Tech) TEXAS TECH: Did not appear in any games last year after redshirting in 2008. HIGH SCHOOL: A 2008 graduate of Goddard High School in Roswell, N.M...rated the No. 2 offensive lineman and No. 8 overall player in the state by Rivals.com as a senior...played both ways, earning first team all-state honors at defensive tackle...All-Region selection by Velocity/PrepStar Magazine...helped the Rockets finish with a 10-4 record and an average victory margin of 30.4 points in 2007...also a member of the wrestling team 10:15 a.m. - Lets quickly review what we have and how they fit the program.
Julian Blair - DE Blair, Wray and Tabannah will impact the secondary immediately. Wray is a multiple threat guy so it's hard to tell which side of the ball he will play on. These are athletes and speeders. Johnson is needed on the offensive line and will help add depth to the position. I actually watched a few clips of Miller and he has good hands. He was able to make big plays at the HS level so hopefully he can have an impact. Reed had a strong season last year but Miller and Mader give UNM options. Hugine is an Oklahoma kid so he has to be good. Joking. I'm from Oklahoma so I hope this kid makes some noise. Coach Carter really liked his abilities and thinks he can play at this level. Hugine is a big kid and will be in a tough battle up front. Our front line on defense could be very strong next year 10:01 a.m. - Just an interesting little note on one of the signees. Julian Blair's dad played football at Towson in the early 1990s where he was a teammate of Lobo head coach Mike Locksley...the two were both starters in the Tigers' secondary in 1991 when Locksley was a senior free safety and Blair was a junior cornerback. 9:56 a.m. -It's a waiting game at this point. I know other NLIs are in but with compliance right now. This class is starting to shape up with a lot of quality and impact players. I'm excited about our future. I think this class is going to have an impact on us immediately. Thank you for everyone sending e-mails. I'll try to answer questions as I can. 9:34 a.m. - Just In! Julian Blair has signed. Blair was a camper at UNM and ran a 4.49 40-yard dash. He has exceptional speed and the ability to be outstanding in the defensive backfield. He is a physical player with great closing speed. Those are words straight from coach Locksley.
Julian Blair - 5-11 - 180 - Fr-HS - DB - Waldorf, Md. (Westlake HS) 9:30 a.m. - I will continue to announce names as we go but will back fill on guys when we have down time. Please feel free to e-mail questions (cdeal@unm.edu). This being one of the biggest days in CFB things are always changing. I'll try to keep everyone updated. All the ESPN networks are running signing day information. Here at UNM we are watching ESPN U. 9:24 a.m. - The coaches are pleased as NLIs continue to pass through the football office.
