Lobos To Get The Pads Popping On Saturday

PHOTO GALLERY - GET TO KNOW THE NEW COACHING STAFF Alfredo V. Moreno -- UNM Assistant Media Relations Director UPDATE -- The second spring football practice under new Lobo football coach Mike Locksley on Thursday afternoon didn't go as smoothly as Tuesday's debut session. Mother Nature was the biggest culprit as the sunshine quickly vanished, temperatures dropped, and frigid winds whipped through the UNM practice fields. New Mexico will hold its first full pads practice on Saturday (10 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.) in what should be much more comfortable conditions. Temperatures will be in the 40s tomorrow morning, but sunny skies and light winds are forecast. Defense carried the day on Thursday's practice as the men in cherry took advantage of several offensive miscues in the biting winds. Frankie Baca, Ian Clark, Carmen Messina, Freddy Young, and Joe Stoner all had interceptions off a variety of Lobo quarterbacks, although some came off dropped passes. After practice coach Locksley told the offense that bad days will happen in practice just like bad series or quarters will happen during games. In those situations, Locksley said somebody has to step up and make a play to stop the slide. The Lobos' competitive fire also led to a few verbal exchanges on the field, but Locksley told his players they would have a chance to back up their talk when they put on the pads on Saturday morning.
