Lobo Football Holds First Spring Scrimmage
March 31, 2010
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- The New Mexico football team concluded its fifth spring practice with an hour-long scrimmage Wednesday inside University Stadium. The Lobos showcased a running game that combined for 139 yards on 20 carries. New Mexico rotated quarterbacks B.R. Holbrook and Brad Gruner against the Lobo defense. UNM will hold a full two-hour scrimmage Saturday inside the stadium starting at 11 a.m. MT.
"I feel like we are further along than last year, but that is expected with a year under our belts," said Lobo head coach Mike Locksley. "We still have a lot of things to improve on. But for our first scrimmage I was happy. Guys were flying around and we walked away injury-free. The two areas I felt were strengths proved that today. Our running backs made some plays and our defensive line was able to get pressure up front. Overall, I was pleased with things and looking forward to a full scrimmage Saturday."
Sophomore RB Kasey Carrier led all rushers with 54 yards on six carries. Carrier darted through the Lobo defense on his first carry for 24 yards and later capped a 16-yard run with a touchdown. It was one of two TDs scored during the scrimmage.
Junior RB James Wright had a 49-yard touchdown reception and 19 yards rushing on five carries. Wright caught a short pass from Holbrook out of the backfield near the east sideline and scampered 49 yards for the TD. It was the only reception for Wright in the scrimmage.
Sophomore RB Demond Dennis rushed for 50 yards on five carries, including a long of 35. Dennis also had a 9-yard run and three two-yard gains.
The quarterback battle remains close between Holbrook and Gruner. The two passers combined for 124 yards with no interceptions and 1 TD. Holbrook led the way with 70 yards in the air. He went 5-11, including the 49-yarder to Wright. Gruner, who completed his last three passes, went 6-12 for 54 yards.
Junior WR Michael Scarlett had two catches for 26 yards while senior Nick Wilhelm caught three balls for 20. Eight different receivers caught passes. Transfer Lamaar Thomas had one catch for 7 yards in the final segment of the scrimmage, but showed his speed throughout practice. Thomas's speed and quickness was on display throughout practice, as he consistently turned routine plays into big gains.
Defensively, junior LB Carmen Messina had 5 tackles, while newly converted DB Carmeiris Stewart racked up 5 stops. Stewart, who moved from WR to DB at the start of spring ball, has been flying to the football and had an INT last week during practice. LB Cody Neely had 2 tackles with one for loss. He also had a pass breakup.
The Lobo defensive line was pressuring both quarterbacks throughout the scrimmage. The front four had a combined for 4 sacks and 2 tackles-for-loss. Defensive ends Jaymar Latchison and Jake Carr each had a sack, while DT Ugo Uzodinma and DE Seth Johannemann recorded half sacks.
Johannemann and DT Peter Gardner both had 4 tackles up front for the Lobos.
Junior kicker James Aho battled the winds to made the only field goal attempt of the scrimmage, connecting from 25 yards.
The Lobos return to practice tomorrow (4-6:15 p.m.) and will hold their second scrimmage of the spring during the Saturday's practice (10:15-1 p.m.).
