2010 Honors Candidate: Nathan Enriquez
April 1, 2010
By Christa Martinez -- GoLobos.com graduate intern
Native New Mexican Nathan Enriquez will be a top contender for a starting position as a defensive back this coming fall. The sophomore proved he could be a real playmaker last season. Enriquez led the team in interceptions and had three pass break-ups- all coming in the end zone. After practice I got to sit down with Enriquez and catch up.
What have you been doing in the offseason?
"In the offseason, I just tried to rest my body, get all of the aches out of me. Just tried to gain some size, it's a little hard to put on weight, but I just eat as much as I can and lift. I rested and just tried to relax my mind and just tried to focus on school. That is the main part for me."
What are your goals for spring ball?
"For spring my goal is to learn everything. They have me at a new position so I need to learn everything, that way when it comes to game time I won't have to think I'll just be able to do it.
Talk about switching positions. How hard is that and what are the differences between what you were doing and what you are doing now?
"The position is just another defensive back so I have some knowledge of it already. It's a coverage and a run-protect position. So it's a little bit different, I have to know how to read a lot of things, but it's really just about knowing your job."
What is your role on the team?
"Mine is just to give effort. When someone needs a break or needs anything, I'm the first guy they run to. They know I can, just based off athleticism. Basically I am a tool that they use at their will."
You are a native New Mexican. What is the best thing about staying close to home?
"It's definitely been nice. Sometimes even I got a little homesick so it's nice on the weekend to call family or have family come up and visit me. It's nice to see them. Also to have people actually come and see me play, I have friends up here that come watch and support me."
Do you think being from New Mexico you have a different sense of pride playing for the Lobos then guys from other parts of the country?
"I think so. Everyone has pride, but being from here I feel like I represent what New Mexicans stand for or what I stand for, pride and not giving up. Doing everything on and off the field without showing weakness."
In 2007 you were a state champion with Las Cruces Mayfield, what was that experience like?
"I actually had three opportunities to win (state), myself and Freddy Young (#17). Each one was greater than the one before. It makes me feel proud of something, but there is always more to accomplish. It's nice to look back upon that, but also to know that there are more steps to take."
What do you do in your free time?
"I don't really have a whole lot of free time, but when I do I can eat a little bit. I can actually eat a whole lot. Also I like to think of sleeping as my hobby. I like to sleep and rest my body."
What is something that people don't know about you that they can't get from reading your bio?
"I love working with kids. I feel like I have something to offer not only with my knowledge of sport but because of the way I was raised and where I was raised. A lot of kids don't get the opportunities I have had. I feel blessed so I like to give back to everyone, including my family, but hopefully one day some of those kids will be doing what I'm doing."
