Indoor Scrimmage Features Big Plays from Offense and Defense
April 11, 2009
Up Next: Practices Monday, Wednesday, Friday 4-6:15 p.m.
It's a good thing the University of New Mexico has an indoor practice facility. Because it seems every time the Lobos have a full-blown scrimmage scheduled for University Stadium Mother Nature has failed to cooperate.
Today was no exception. On a damp, cloudy, breezy morning with temperatures in the mid-40s, the Lobo football team repaired to the comforts of the IPF (Indoor Practice Facility) for the fourth time in 11 spring workouts.
Head coach Mike Locksley was pleased with the effort and saw improvement on both sides of the ball.
The Lobo offense was sharp early, scoring on two of its first three possessions. Junior QB Tate Smith struck first when he made a nice play fake, rolled right and found junior WR Chris Hernandez down the right sideline for a 42-yard score.
Smith and Hernandez also hooked up on a 60-yard score later in the scrimmage.
Sophomore QB Brad Gruner took the controls on the next series and led the offense on a 60-yard scoring drive. The big play was a 42-yard completion to sophomore WR Michael Scarlett. Gruner capped the march with a 3-yard TD on an option keeper.
The defense then took over, holding the offense without a score for the next eight possessions.
Big plays were aplenty. Senior LB Tray Hardaway caused a fumble on sophomore RB James Wright. Senior DT Kendall Briscoe and sophomore DE Jaymar Latchison made consecutive sacks to halt a drive. Sophomore S Bubba Forrest picked off a pass by freshman QB Emmanuel Yeager. Senior S Frankie Solomon made a nice recovery to deflect a pass on fourth down while redshirt freshman CB Edrick Boger blocked his first of two field goals on the day. Boger also had an interception near the goal line.
The offense got back in the end zone on its 12th possession. Yeager had a nifty 27-yard scramble down the far sideline that set up an 11-yard TD run by redshirt freshman TB A.J. Butler.
Butler led all running backs with 96 yards on 22 carries. He also caught four passes for 25 yards. Junior Terence Brown arguably had his best scrimmage of the spring, churning inside and outside for 82 yards on 18 attempts.
Smith completed 7 of 13 passes for 136 yards and two TDs and had another scoring pass dropped. Senior Donovan Porterie was accurate, going 9 of 12 for 82 yards.
Hernandez made the most of his three catches, gaining 110 yards and scoring two TDs. Sophomore Michael Scarlett grabbed four receptions for 66 yards.
Defensively, sophomore LB Carmen Messina had a team-high 14 tackles. Forrest added nine stops.
The kicking game was off, though. Sophomore James Aho was short from 46 and had a 40-yard attempt blocked. Sophomore Drew Zamora had a 30-yarder blocked and missed from 35 before connecting from 31 and 20 yards, respectively.
The Lobos continue workouts Monday, Wednesday and Friday before the Cherry-Silver game next Saturday afternoon.
Final note on the weather. The forecast for next week's Cherry-Silver game calls for fair skies and 71 degrees. Kickoff is 1 p.m. from University Stadium.
