Saturday: Southern University at New Mexico
The University of New Mexico football team embarks on its 114th season Saturday when it plays host to Football Championship Subdivision member Southern University at 3 p.m.
Play-by-play announcer Scott Galetti and special guest color commentator Hank Baskett will handle the radio duties on the Lobo Radio Network. Javier Misiego and Paco Pocorro will call the game in Spanish on ESPN Deportes New Mexico (1450 KRZY-AM). The game will not be televised.
The Lobos' Bob Davie is coaching his first game since Dec. 1, 2001 when he was the head coach at Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish beat Purdue 24-15.
UNM is 63-47-3 all-time in season openers, including a 52-21-2 record in home openers.
The Lobos, however, have lost their last six season openers, including a 14-10 decision to Colorado State at home last season. UNM's last win was a 24-22 triumph over UNLV on Labor Day in 2005 in front of a nationally televised audience on ESPN. During its six-year drought, New Mexico has lost two at home -- the other was a 26-3 loss to TCU in 2008.
UNM is one of five schools that does not have a bye week in 2012. The others are California, Louisiana-Monroe, UNLV and Western Michigan. UNM and UNLV play 13 games; the others play 12. The Lobos are the only ones who play on 13 consecutive Saturdays. The Rebels start their season Thursday and have nine days before their second game.
The 2012 New Mexico edition returns eight starters on offense, five on defense and two on special teams. The Lobos will play a version of the pistol formation on offense and a 3-4 base defense.
Halftime of today's game has been extended from 20 to 25 minutes as both the UNM and Southern ("The Human Jukebox") bands will perform. Other promotions are:
