Emerald Bowl Photo Journal: Day One

Dec. 26, 2004

The University of New Mexico football team sprinkled into the Bay Area today, arriving at various times throughout the late morning after spending the holidays in their respective hometowns. Preparation for the 2004 Emerald Bowl got underway immediately as the team went straight to the practice field at Oakland's Laney College.

Despite a persistent strong, cold wind, the Lobos turned in a sharp practice on the fieldturf surface at Laney College. Head coach Rocky Long said he was pleased with the team's effort coming off the 5-day layoff.

Practice resumes again tomorrow morning, before the players and staff hop aboard a ferry for a guided tour of the infamous Alcatraz prison. Check back tomorrow night for a new photo journal of the day's events. Also be sure to read senior linebacker Fola Fashola's diary of his first day in San Francisco.

The Laney College Eagles home stadium in Oakland serves as the Lobos' practice field this week.

The picturesque Fieldturf field features a view of downtown Oakland.

Back up kicker Kenny Byrd sends this long field goal through the uprights in the swirling wind.

The Lobo D squares off against the scout team offense, running Navy's option offense.
