New Mexico Finishes Ninth at Arizona Intercollegiate

    The University of New Mexico men's golf team didn't quite close the final round of the Arizona Intercollegiate as it had hoped, shooting a -14-over-par 298 in the final round to finish in ninth place with a 6-over 858 for 54 holes. Freshman golfer John Catlin topped the Lobos' efforts, finishing in a five-way tie for 11th place after carding a 4-under 66-66-77=209. Catlin had been tied for the lead at 10-under entering Tuesday's final round.

    University of New Mexico freshman golfer John Catlin finds himself tied for first place at the Arizona Invitational. Catlin shot matching 5-under-par 66s to complete the first two rounds at 10-under, tied with California's Micheal Weaver atop the leaderboard. New Mexico finds itself tied with Florida and 10th-ranked Texas A&M for fifth place after carding an 8-under 283-277=560. The Lobos trail California (-25), Arizona (-18), Fresno State (-11) and Pepperdine (-9) heading into Tuesday's final round.

    The University of New Mexico men's golf team looks to shake the chill of winter and open its 2010 spring season at the Arizona Invitational, Feb. 1-2, at Arizona National Golf Club. Hosted by the University of Arizona, it is the first major college golf event of the spring season. The 2010 Arizona Invitational is a 54-hole event, which will be contested at Arizona National, a par 71, 6,793-yard layout. Thirty-six holes will be played on Monday, Feb. 1 with continuous play scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. MST. The final 18 holes will start at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 2.

    ALBUQUERQUE, NM -
    For four of New Mexico's former men's golfers, the PGA's assorted Tour Qualifying Tournaments - or Q Schools, as they're commonly called - helped them cement a spot on a professional tour for the coming year.

    Three former Lobos, Spencer Levin, D.J. Brigman and Madalitso Muthiya each qualified for the final of three stages at the PGA Tour Q School, as did Jay Choi at the Japan Tour Q School.

    Kortan Brings Vast Experience to Men's Golf

    University of New Mexico men's golf coach Glen Millican has announced the hiring of Brian Kortan as his new assistant coach. Kortan replaces Jim Anderson, who was hired as the assistant coach at Texas A&M this past August. He was selected from a field of 20 applicants and four finalists.

    Kortan comes to New Mexico after a stellar 16-year professional golf career, competing on various professional golf tours including the PGA, Dakotas, Hooters, Gateway, Adams and Nationwide tours. He played in the 2008 US Open and notched wins at over 15 professional events throughout his career, including the 2009 Capital One Classic and 2008 New Mexico Open.
